when do new designs come out?

About how many years does it take for a new generation...I'm thinking Native IV, a hybrid of the native I and III with upgrades (contoured G10 with S30V steel?) But what about the Delica and Endura 5s? I haven't been around long enough to know when and how new designs come about?

Thanks,
Phil

Edit: I don't want anyone on the spyderco team or spydie fans to think anything is wrong with the current designs, I just want more more and MORE of the Native and other designs :)

The Delica III appeared in '98 and the Delica IV has just been released, so I guess it will take some time till the 5th generation. But I heard some (unconfirmed) stories regarding an updated Native ;)

I'm sure most manufacturers hope for many years in the lifespan of a design, but it really is impossible to guess on something like that.

Keep an eye out here or on Spyderco.com forums though as the 2007 Catalog should be coming out anytime now. That is about as far ahead as any of us can hope to see.

New designs tend to come out when you're broke and can't afford them...:D

I would like to see a Native FB and a Native with S30V and handles like the Native III, G10 would be even better. Sal said a Native III with S30V is a possibility.

New designs -from concept to prototype to production- used to take(or at least in my perception) several years, 2 to 3 years. Mind you, that's from the first online announcement of a concept model. The timeframe between production prototype to actual production was usually around 90 days (also the term that made online posting of pics OK).

Nowadays I see some pretty fast designs. The Mini Manix concept model for example, was first shown in the a'dam show of 2005 (with some funky cutouts in the handle BTW) and by next year's meeting, the production model had already reached the masses.

I'd still say that you'd need to expect at least a year from the online 'we're going to make it' untill production. There are many factors that can cause delays. The most important one being 'taking enough time to do it right'.:D
