When do you carry your heavy knives?

Like many of us here, I own several heavy duty (and heavy weight) knives just because I like the design. I can freely carry all my knives at work (A lot of the guys even ask to use my knives during lunchtime to cut up the fresh tomatoes we bring in to share), but I find I put the smaller ones (Rift, Caly 3, Sebenza, etc.) in my pocket when it comes time to choose each morning. I own ZT's, an original Large Manix, SERE 2000, etc., and though they are all built to cut through a helichopter's windshield, I find I don't carry them that often. I got them and keep them because they are well designed, but I find a smaller knife carries and cuts better everyday. I often have to break apart boxes, remove gaskets, cut zip-ties, etc., but a nice light and strong folder like a Stetch II does that job just fine. Don't get me wrong, I carry them sometimes (I have a Bone Collector in my pocket now), just not often.

Some of them I bought specifically for the outdoors (fixed and folders, don't get me started on my knives from Busse, Scrapyard, etc.) but when it comes time to pack that bag, I find myself grabbing my BM530, Ritter Grip, or SAK. And I leave the Bravo-1 and RAT's in the drawer and pack one of my trusty Moras.

In a word, yes. My rotation varies based on what I will be doing that particular day. On weekends I carry a single large folder usually.
Here is an example of my rotation:

Large Folders:
Spyderco Military (Only have 1 at a time)
Spyderco Gayle Bradley (Tied for pocket time with Military)
ZT 302
ZT 350 or the 350CB
Emerson A100
CS Recon 1 Clip Point (beater/prying knife)

Medium/Small Folders (for office use, only have 1 at a time)
SAK SD (fits in the coin/watch pocket)
Spyderco Delica
Spyderco Stretch
Spyderco Endura
Spyderco Leafstorm

Always with me:
Leatherman Supertool 300 or the Wave

On weekends the larger Spyderco, ZT, or Emerson finds it's way into my pocket.

I carry a BM610 almost daily these days, its pretty heavy but I really like using it. Doesn't bother me that much and sometimes its nice to have a tank like that.

i'm getting to the point where i don't like being without a large/heavy fixed blade on me. i don't mind the stares of OC'n a FB, but i don't like the idea of having my only knife in plain sight either. as soon as i figure a way to carry both - a large bowie(ish) blade and a hidden one, i'll carry my "heavy knife" edc.

Like you, I have some heavy duty folders. ie. SEB, SERE 2000, Socom Elite II, ect. Usually find myself with a paramilitary in my pocket because, it's light and cuts well.

When in the woods I do like a strong, reliable fixed blade. While I own some large and heavy knifes, again, I find myself with something midsize, but strong and reliable. Maybe a Fallkniven S1 or CRK Mountain II. Another favorite of mine is a BRK&T Aurora. The bigger A1 or Busses typically stay behind.

However, I have to admit the last 2 elk hunts I found myself in some pretty isolated areas. I did have a Busse SJTAC on one, with a CRK Green Beret on the other. Just in case.....

Carry an Emerson CQC 11 (big, kinda heavy) at work all the time

Carry a Spyderco Gayle Bradley (heavy) off and on

I find my BM rift in my pocket most of the time.

I'm going to the store in a minute with an XM-24 in my pocket. That's pretty heavy. Maybe I should rock my Rajah 1, what do you think? :)

I always carry my ZT 0301 and Leatherman Wave...Both in horizontal belt-sheaths. I'm a big guy, so I carry big knives.:D.

;)That's strange, I stopped carrying my 4oz and under knives, because I like the feeling of a heavy knife in hand and in pocket. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I carry my 741 Onslaught all the time in a cargo pocket. I don't know if I would call it heavy, more like big.

I don't usually carry heavy folders anymore. I got rid of my ZT 0300 because of its weight. I do still have a ZT 0500 Mudd, but I keep that in my bag, as I don't usually carry it on my person.

I can't say I'm only into light folders, though. I find myself carrying my lg. reg. Seb or a Spyderco PPT. Neither of those are light, although they're not very heavy, either.

At work I carry a heavy tactical folder on me, plus a fixed blade in my gear bag. At home I'll carry a SAK and a stockman.

I have two customs that are both bricks. Next to those my production folders are all featherweights, even the beefy ones. But yeah, the Millie usually finds its way into my pocket. Weight is weight.... its difficult to ignore completely.

QFT :D I have gotten into edc'ing my ZT 302 and though its considered a large knife it doesnt slow me down.

I go in fazes from carrying overbuilt folders for a few weeks/months to carrying slipjoints to gentlemans folders.

So far I see advantages to each style and havent necessarily found the one that has all the advantages. The only one that comes close (as I like larger folders) to being both big and light etc would be the Spyderco Military. Its large and its light, the flat grind lets it cut very well and the handle is perfect for me. Still its the one that other folders are measured against in my book.

Daily, I usually carry one big folder (MT LCC, Kershaw Tyrade, Offset, JYD II SG2, A. G. Russell Texas Ranger 2009) and one smaller folder.

The big one is for fun and "Just in case"

The smaller one sees the majority of use.

All except the Offset are carried horizontal on my belt.

I carry them and use them. We live on a small ranch in the middle of nowhere. I find I need a strong folder or large chopper on a near daily basis.

Yesterday I walked across the property to feed our bull. I took a medium sized khuk with me to cut back low-hanging branches from the cattle path I took. When I got to the corral I used my ZT MUDD to cut the mesh wrap from a new round bale of coastal hay for the big boy.

This kind of thing is pretty danged common around here.

I always like to have a large fixed on me when hiking or camping. Part of that is because I just like big knives, but then I actually use them alot. I seem to do a lot of chopping, and small knives just don't get it done for me. And an axe dosn't work well for clearing vines, brush, small limbs. So it's big knife or light machete for me most of the time. :)
