Hi All,
Just wondering if you guys put an adge on your knives before heat treat or after ? In the past I've done it before. However, I have been wondering lately if I should wait until after ? What are the pro's and con's to each ? Thanks, take care.....RDT

I believe it was Bob Lovlace said "I put the edge on last and that's why I still have all my fingers and toews."That may not be exact but it's close and it sure is the the truth. Frank Niro

DITTO! Right before it goes into the box for shipping, or before it goes into the case heading for a show.

If you send out your blades for heat treatment, keep in mind that many heat treaters would have a problem with fully sharpened blades as it creates handling difficulties for them.

Yup. AFTER the knife is done and comes back from the sheathmakers [Martin Morrissey]and is getting ready to ship to a customer.

DAMN ! and I just put edges on 7 knives ready for ht. Next time I'll try it your way, it makes sense. I don't bring them to a razor edge until after ht. I usually do a very roughedge, still sharp just rougher feeling and looking. Now I know better, thanks guys....RDT

I put an edge on the blade after the heat treat and final grind so I can test the edge for cutting and toughness. If it passes...I dull it and tape it up...then the handle work starts.

Hey Gib! It's The Other Tim from Primal Fires. Anyway, I put a basic edge (not a finished one) before the heat treat when the steel's annealed. After it's done, I'll put a final edge on. Then again, I'm still young and stupid and haven't cut my fingers enough yet... ;)
