When is it appropriate to use a machete instaed of a hatchet for cutting firewood? I ask because of comments on this video:

One of the comments say to use a machete for something like that. I know I'd make kindling with the hatchet but wondered if the commenter was right. Should this guy be using a machete? I can't imagine someone in the Canadian wildernes using a machete on this but they mostly use axes there, maybe??

Thanks.

I live, camp and hunt in the Rocky Mountains. I don't even own a machete.

An axe or hatchet is for chopping firewood, (a chainsaw is even better :D ) and, IMHO, a machete is for cutting your way through a jungle, or settling diusputes in third world saloons. :p

I think a small folding saw works better when camping/backpacking for cutting firewood. I've never had the need to do much batoning. I just select smaller pieces of wood. I guess you have to pick the right tool for where you're going.

i always use my hawk and i live in canada, for me a machete would be a last resort to chop with

if you need to punch a hole through the undergrowth, everything from vines to 4" diameter hardwoods, the machete will work faster everytime... if the hatchet were faster then it would be a staple in a land surveyors kit. the brush axe and the machete are the fastest way to cut line without gas power

if you are in sticks, you'all never have a man.
in jungle you,ll never have a hatchet. enviroment dictates what you should carry.also light saws are always a good idea

The only Axe I own is a polanski, not that great for chopping wood. In a perfect situation I think a mid sized axe would cover most camping/hiking duties. As for me I carry a saw and a khukuri and stay away from anything thicker than 5". Now with that being said and I was going stopping in some serious back country for any length of time 94-5 weeks) I would pack in a full sized axe, khukuri, 6" hunting/survival knife 30" saw, and a 4" blades folder just incase.
