'Allo,

I was wondering, i'm sorta considering a REKAT Sifu just because I think they are cool, but I need a little more justification than that - so I ask ya... when has your Sifu's enormous size been any actual advantage?

In a semi-unrelated question, for those of you who got it coated, what coating does REKAT use for their blades? Also what steel are they made of?

well mine worked great slicing melons lol - it really does!! as far as metals, ATS34 is std i think, and some are D2 - i dont know the name of the coating, but it is one of the better ones imho, had mine a while (6-8 months??) and no wear yet - i dont know if the size really helps ya, but it cant hurt either imho - and they really carry well, as easy as a BM 800, etc - just make sure it locks up correctly, are ya will see how the long blade can be a negative tooo.....

I have had 5 Sifu. Right now I'm down to only 2 of the monsters. They are excellent, well-built folders.

As far as their size doing me much good...I hope that never happens, as I carry my Sifu as my dedicated "defensive/offensive" folder.

The sifu is really larger than a utility knife has to be. You are not going to be able to whip it out in public without attracting undo attention. Its pretty purpose driven and that purpose is defensive in nature and its going to be quite offensive to anyone not into knives who sees it. Sure you can use for other knife tasks, its just thats not really where it shines. Why do a job with it that a 3 inch blade folder can do equally well. Very very sheeple unfriendly. Like the syderco civilian. Which is why I like them both.

I have one of the older ATS34 Sifus with the green G10 handles. It is very cool mainly because it is just so wicked looking. I find that it is not really good for heavy duty use as it uses "stand offs" between the liners instead of a larger, more substantial solid spacer. The end result is that the entire handle will twist under hard use due to all of the various components in the construction. I hope I am describing this correctly.

Hi YoungCutter

this story may not be exactly what you are asking for,
but the only time i realy used my Sifu was satisfactorily:

One night when at work i met a LEO i knew by name and he knew i`m
a knifenut (but no a LEO - just working where he has to come around often)
We always were friendly with each other, making jokes and so on..
So this time he wanted to anger me with comments about the new gun/knifelaw comming here in Germany soon.
I agreed with him that the restriction of autoopeners from 3" to 2"
woud be a great improvement to puplic safety,
then took out my Sifu, opened it, and sayed "but this will still be legal"
Seeing him looking at the big blade and hear him say: "silly law"
was all i wanted for the price of that Sifu!

I plan to carry a "Ontario Bagwell Hells Bell Bowie" just for this reason.

I have a neighbor who lives close by. Where I live we all have 4 to 5 acre tracs of land because that's how the land was sold in this area. This allows one to keep horses and a large barn for stables. This particular neighbor lets people from a nearby town board horses on his place. I came in one evening and saw his barn on fire. I got over there as soon as I could and found him and 3 horses tied off with ropes inside his barn and all were in a panic. The horses kept major tension on the ropes trying to pull away and he could not untie them. I immediately pulled my SIFU out of my belt sheath, flipped it open, ran to the horses and cut the 3 ropes with one heavy slash on each rope. The horses immediately ran out of the barn along with me and him. If I had not had my SIFU with me which I carry every day, things could have turned out much differently since they were all in a panic and not thinking clearly. A big knife can do things a little wimp knife just can't do.
