The last word I heard was sometime in July. Just wondering if anyone has heard anything about when the 5.5 inch blade Green Beret knives may show up?

Dennis Wright of Wright Knife & Sporting Goods, La Mesa, CA. (619) 465-6905, had one at the Del Mar 'Crossroads of the West' Gun show this weekend, competitively priced at $269...a sweet knife for sure!

He got in two on Friday eve, one was pre-sold, and the one at the show went within the 1st hour. I could be wrong, but I think WK&SG is the largest 'volume' CRK dealer on the west coast...you may want to give him a ring.

Also, we would have bought the one he had, but we already have a handmade on backorder from Wm. 'Bill' Harsey... :D

UPS just delivered mine a few minutes ago. I was totally expecting another knife from CRK so imagine my delight when I noticed that the logo on the box read CR Harsey  .

This knife, in a word, is simply remarkable. The sheath is excellent. Even the odor is pleasant. I now have to fight off the urge to get the 7" blade.

Cheers.

Dammit.....that's the same story I'm telling. I'm waiting on the drawing Mr Harsey has promised. Melvin did you order a left handed folder? He said he was making another lefty for someone in San Diego.
I seem to be developing some kind of Harseyitis.
I will be forced to buy the 5.5 It really is cool.

Melvin, thanks for the plug but you're a couple of digits off on the price. It's actually $289.00. There's only $10.00 difference between the 5.5" and the 7.5" and I don't discount CRK. (The pre-order backed out, BTW. Car trouble...or something with a higher priority.)

Just got mine from CRK today. This is now my favorite large production fixed blade knife, replacing its bigger brother in this category! The 7.5" is awesome, and definitely would be better for battle or for clearing and chopping, but then again there are better tools for the latter chores (machete, hatchet).
Make no mistake, this 5.5" is a beefy thing, being made with the same thickness stock as the larger version. It has a substantial heft. I hate to compare to Busses, which I no longer own, but "hell for stout" comes to mind when I think of the fine Busse products, and that applies here as well. But this knife has far superior workmanship, and for my hands at least, has superior ergonomics as well. May or may not be "nuclear tough," but I would not hesitate to count on the performance of the CRK products, and for me, workmanship and ergonomics are very important as well.
Highly recommended!

Thanks for update, jki. You got me all worked up. I should be getting mine from CRK any day now.

Thanks for the review, JKJ!
Can you compare the blade profile to the full size one? Is it the same? The pic I saw of an early 5.5 had a slightly different blade shape than the 7".

Thanks!

The blade profile is identical in the two knives, and the handles are precisely the same.
The 5.5" blade has one less serration on the same pattern as the 7.5" blade (nice touch; gives the shorter blade just a touch more belly than if it had the same number of serrations.) The swedge is identical in dimensions.
Just imagine removing 2" of straight blade length between the ricasso and the start of the swedge from the larger blade and you get the idea.
Balance point: On the 7.5", the knife balances just very slightly behind the "guard," while on the shorter knife, the balance point has moved back to the middle of the first finger groove behind the guard (right at the handle screw). The 7.5" feels slightly blade heavy in the hand, while the 5.5" is more balanced. With that superb handle, either knife just feels great in the hand.
Sorry, I don't have a scale, but as I said before, the 5.5" is no lightweight. Some may prefer a lighter knife in this bladelength, and for a hunting knife this smaller Green Beret is probably not an optimum solution. But for a hard-packing camp knife or a figher, this would be an excellent choice.

Neil of TNK has some in stock...here is a pic (with his permission)

Joss,

I just weighed them.

The knife itself weighs; 11.8 ounces / 330 grams. The knife and sheath together weigh 17 ounces / 476 grams.

Jeeves

The blade profile seems to be he same- it might "appear" a bit different due to the relationship between and smaller (length) blade on the same handle as the larger 7” version.

Hope this helps,

Neil

An unnamed high level spokeswoman in Boise, ID announced yesterday that leather GFeller sheaths for the 5.5 inch Green Beret knife are expected in a couple of weeks.
