When is a Tin knife not a Tin knife ?

Enough of the riddles let me show ya !

Now the premise of this exercise is that for whatever reason the only knife ya have with you is your Tin knife, thus in reality it would have taken me maybe 20 minutes to prep the handle. However, as I always seem to have my Booshway with me I decided to take only 5 minutes and use that !

Cut yourself a nice handle sized bit of branch. You could leave it rough but I spent a few minutes whittling mine before I started the split:

Splitting the handle till it was maybe 2/3 rds of the way down :

It really doesn't matter if ya split the stick into two halves but I prefer to leave part of it intact. Then slide ya tin knife in position and start lashing that sucker in tight ! You can use Paracord or if going the natural route you can use Cedar roots etc. I chose to use some masonry twine as it's tough stuff and ya can get it nice and tight:

And here we have it a Tin knife that is no longer a Tin knife !

With a full size handle you can now really get some cutting done and will find it now cuts like a full sized belt knife:

Might as well not let those curls go to waste:

2 strikes of the ferro-rod with the back of the knife and we have fire !

Now to kick back with a cup of tea:

With the fire done I stripped the Tinny back down and placed it back in the fire kit:

Maybe I'll try this spot next time:

How about this, Otters were using a Squirrels eating spot as their pooping spot ! Maybe they don't like the Squirrel eh !!!

Not sure if the Otters were in this hole but Maisy sure seemed determined to get in there !

I will add that the handle idea is not mine, I saw it on another forum and figured I'd give it a go !

Pitdog, I think a tin knife is always going to be a tin knife lol. Unless you decide to call it another knife.

Great way to make your (tin) knife a longer handled TIN knife:thumbup:

The way I figure it is that it stops being a Tin knife when it won't fit in the tin !:D

Glad to see ya back on here Bryan !;)

Hafting a small blade is a great idea. You can even do this with a utility knife blade as an emergency back up knife, or with a larger necker to make a spear or gig.

How much would it take to buy Snicker? Do you add PP fees? Ship FEDEX? I do like that doglett!:p

I think I've had heavier knives shipped !:D

great stuff Pit... i have one of those tin knives from mark too, they're pretty darn cool...

I am just glad that you did not slice your hand in half.

LOL, I was waiting for someone to comment on that ! That was just a posed pic, I set the camera on auto and by the time I sat back down and picked up my knife it was flashing to take the pic....I didn't have time to think how I was holding the darn thing !:D

Yeah, I noticed that but he was prying open a split, not slicing downward.

Fortunately, Pitdog has been up and down the trail enough times to know not to sweat the petty things and not to pet the sweaty things!:p

EDIT: OOPS! He has confessed the error of his ways!

Nice one Pit. That tin knife of yours also has a built-in "barb" where the blade meets the handle, for making a frog gig with a small diameter sapling. Maybe otters don't like squirrels...but that "maybe next time" spot looks really nice too. Oh...next time try to keep your foot out of the fire :)

This should make it into my knife safety lecture!

"Yeah, kids. We used to call him Pit Dog. Now we call him Lefty. Ms. Lefty actually." :D

I thought the same thing at first, but after re-reading I was hoping...giving him the benefit of the doubt anyway ...that at that point he was only trying to pry the two halves open a little to see how much spread it had...he did say he prefers to leave the butt end attached and not split all the way through. If he was much applying downward force at that point then he may learn some day why that is a really bad idea ;)

Ray Mears I'm not but give me a little credit, even Pit Jr wouldn't try cutting in that position....Ok maybe Pit Jr might !:D

I was going to ask who was taking those pictures for you before your confession. You did a decent job of setting up the shot and getting into position before the shutter tripped. If/when I get a camera, you may only see shots of scenery and gear. I would likely step in my fire or cut my hand if I tried to do that!;)

ROFL!!! To be perfectly honest, when I saw the picture my first thought was "Pit knows better than that."
