When is the Best Time to Stamp a Knife

Probably have better luck on the knifeakers sub. I do mine before ht when I made knives.

As Hoss mentioned. I do all mine after profiling and hole drilling but prior to heat treat

Practice on cheap steel or scrap blade steel to get the feel. Get the feel for what causes a double strike. The most common error is deeper on one end than the other and washing out your name grinding away decarb. Many folks who stamp eventually make a jig to keep the stamp square to the blade.

If you look at the “Forgers” page on henryaevers dot com and scroll down you’ll see their design for a slightly different jig. Just more ideas for if you make your own…
I think polish avengers’s jig looks mighty fine, too.

Here's another version I use...---the second picture has a heat treated blade in it ONLY FOR DEMONSTRATION.

THE HEAT TREATED BLADE IS IN IT ONLY FOR DEMONSTRATION!

I have a press that holds the stamp to the knife. One hand on the press handle and the other for smacking. I'll do a bunch when I stamp:

I have never been fancy enough to make a jig. I use a large square magnet to hold the stamp, works well enough. Actually moving on to using a 50 pound 90° welding magnet.

I do mine hot, after the profile is ground, but before HT. I also only stamp forged blades, and I'm also not great at consistency. I built a jig that looks like a bird pooped on it, and it does help lol.
