Well, while the absolution thread was blowing up today over my knife sale.... I was out enjoying the rain and all that it brings.

All I will say about the now famous kephart, is that I will be happy to chat with anyone about what went down in a pm. I apologize for any drama it created and I wish the offended party the best in finding his perfect knife.

Back to the rain..... As many of you know, we are having a severe drought here in California. It has been very nice to finally get some rain in the last few weeks. We had some rain today, so I took the opportunity to go for a walk out in the forest with a friend. We were enjoying looking at mushrooms, plants, birds and other things, when we ran into an elder German fellow I had seen out there on other rainy days. He showed me a king bolete he had found. The king bolete, Boletus edulis, is highly sought after by mushroom hunters. They usually disappear quickly due to all the eager collectors who want to eat this edible fungus. I am not a mushroom hunter but I do like to go look at them and try to id what I can. We had been walking for about an hour and I had not seen any of the famous kings. In fact I had not previously found any that I can remember, ever. Within a few minutes of him showing me his find, I proceeded to spot two nice ones. He confirmed that they were king boletes. I was very excited to finally be in the company of nobility. I am not sure if I will eat them, but there is something cool about collecting edible things.

First some other fungi we saw.

And Finally The KINGS......

I'm glad you guys are getting some rain!

Awesome pics. Dude, that shroom is huge.

Nice pics Tod; those are massive -- what kind of fungi is that (clearly it's edible)?

Great pic and thread!
Hunting and wild crafting edibles is such a great pastime and knowledge

Pics look great. I guess I missed the drama part. I'll look into it.

Awesome pics man, really nice fungi in that area! I love going hiking during and after a rain.

Awesome shots Tod.....I'd like to have my wife paint one of these on canvas so I can hang it in my office......would that be OK with you ?

That is one beefy shroom. Thanks for sharing. This is one area that I wish I was more knowledgeable in as it would be a fun and rewarding past time harvesting some of the fungi I see out in the wild.

Let not your heart be troubled Hasco. You didn't do anything wrong. Nice pics.

Great pics man, the ones in that first pic are just gorgeous!

So did you eat them..? You kinda have to if you pick 'm

I thought I had responded earlier.... Oops!

Great pictures! I love being in the woods when it's wet--it seems to silence everything. Somehow that clears my mind. Seriously epic shrooms! Seeing them makes me understand why it's called "hunting."

Only if you show us how it turns out! That would be neat to see!

Yeh. I love getting food from the land but with mushrooms you have to know what your doing. The best is to go out with a local mushroom group and learn all the really poisonous ones first.

Thanks Andy.

I sautéed the little one with a little olive oil and butter and it was delicious! The bigger one I sliced up and I am drying in the dehydrator.

Lovely pictures, thanks for sharing!

I'm not into wild mushrooms, but I am into gathering other wild edibles and there are tons in my area. Maybe this will help push me to get pictures of some of our local edibles.

Like Heber I also enjoy collecting wild edibles (when I'm abroad anyway, there's too much pollution where I live unfortunatly) but I usually leave the mushrooms alone because I don't know enough about them to consume them safely. Maybe someday I'll find someone who can educate me but it's never been a real priority because of their low nutritional value, & I still have so much to learn about other wild edibles we can actually live off.

I love sauteed shrooms!! Looking good Tod.
