I recently brought in my latest knife build to work to show the soon to be owner and to advertise a bit. Most people i work with are inquisitive and ask questions and want to handle the knife ETC and this has led to a few more orders coming in... but a few are shocked to see a 6" blade being handled and give sideways looks ETC. One of our higher ups even reached out to take the knife when offered and then pulled his hand back...like it was going to attack;A look just short of terror on his face.
The weirdest part to me is that everyone i work with is armed.. most with rifle and pistol, some with only pistol. all the more hilarious to me. sooo what causes the reaction? Have we as a society gotten away from seeing a knife as a tool and are more comfortible with firearms?

I know this has been discussed before but i guess i`m trying to understand why an armed person would have fear of a knife in a non threat environment, but have no issue cutting cake at home with a giant Ginsu.

I think a big thing is simply that it's not the norm. It's something newish that they don't get confronted with very often and it makes them uncomfortable on some levels, some people more than others.

Most folks I come into contact with on a daily basis, saw me toting a 9" blade lashed to the outside of my.pack today.

Yeah, people are stoopid. I'm still not used to it.

Being a knifenut is quite difficult sometimes.

Some people react with curiosity and interest, while others react with fear and ignorance.
It's something that they're not used to. As sad as it is, guns are the normal now.
While yet, almost everyone's grandpa carried a knife.
Knives were a normal every day thing back in the day.
Yet today, people are shocked to see someone with one.
Though over time - knives have been more related to violence in the more present years.
Yet guns and gun collecting don't really raise as many eyebrows.
Knife lovers and collectors just aren't as known.
While even your average Joe knows there are several types of guns and much to be found interesting, they don't know that there are differences in knives.
Most people only know knives like Smith and Wesson and Kershaw.
I pulled out my CRK Sebenza and had a guy say "Wow is that a Kershaw?!"
I muttered "No", and then secretly, I rolled my eyes.

People will always have different reactions. Some ask questions and want to know.
Others act in fear or think they know all there is to know - Simply from ignorance.

It's just something we need to deal with. - Especially being a minority.

He may be so risk-averse that he didnt want his fingerprints on it for fear of trouble down the road, that's my only guess.

I wonder what kind of reaction do you expect to get if you brandish a gun in your office: probably some people would be inquisitive and ask questions and want to handle the gun but a few be shocked to see a gun being handled and give sideways looks ETC...
I personally do not like people waving 6" blades in public. That is just my personal point of view: not that I am stupid afraid of knives or something.

in 20+ years in an occupation that involved me to be armed and working with others that were required to be too, I've learned that the VAST majority of people(that are required to carry) come to look at guns as accessories, not tools/weapons.

the VAST majority(even in the military) of these people aren't gun people, they just carry one because its required.

a knife on the other hand isn't required, so its not an accessory, its still looked at as a weapon.

YMMV
