When oiling blades, do you leave the oil on or wipe off the excess?

Stupid beginner question, but I put a thin coating of Hoppe's gun oil on my DAM Leek and don't know if I should leave it on the blade or try to wipe any excess off. Thanks.

While I don't use Hoppes, I do use 3-in-1 oil on mine and I do wipe mine down. I'll apply a liberal amount at first and then lightly rub the blade down until the oil can no longer be seen. One can only tell that the blade has been treated by touching it and feeling the light coat.

What do you use to rub the blade down? I know tissues and similar things won't work due to the lint, so something lint free I presume?

I use an old tee shirt that has a light coating of oil on it and simply wipe the blade with it. I use a #10 oil food grade for this.

I just grab a paper town out of the kitchen. Worst case is I get a light scratch in the blade from cheap paper towels but I use all of my knives anyway.

Get a Marine Tuf-Cloth, it leaves a dry film on the blade. Oh, and you won't have to use paper towels and old shirts anymore. :D
