Should I cover the steel iwith flux before heating it or after? or somewhere in between?

I flux at the first sign of red. If you wait until scale forms it is too late. You cant forge weld scale. Make sure you have it slighly dark in the room so your colors are visible. The sun always fools me. Bruce

Bruce, how do you apply the borax? Does a flour sifter work well???

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

hey mike i use an old steel ammo can fill it full of borax and use a stainless laddle to spoon the borax over my work and those shakers for parmesan cheese and red peppers you know like the ones at the pizza huts work real good or sometimes i just stick it straight in the can

Mike I do it about like Rotor does. Just be sure not to miss a spot. It starts flowing when it gets hot enough and gets down in the cracks like melted butter. I use a spoon for the first fluxing and then use a big salt shaker for the repeat fluxes. Bruce
