battle of greeks vs. the Roman phalynx? Long pike vs. short sword?

Can opener vs. bottle opener?

I dunno about Gladius versus wak as i have neither types of sword in my collection but I did have some fun recently fighting polearm (actually the washingline post) versus double viking style (left arm forward with sword upright right hand back with the sword held blade down in the hand) It was actually pretty effective at sweeping the polearm out of the way and getting some wicked followthroughs with the sword in the right. Similar against the rapier. I actually enjoy these topics but think if you really want to know the answers, get a wak and a gladius and play about with a partner. figure the pros and cons out for yourself.

So if 2 swordsman went at it, one trained in 2 viking sword technique and the other with a rapier, who would win, I think the 2 sword viking guy would. None of it historical or even remotly realistic but a lot of fun. Also it allowed me to compare the handling charicteristics of 2 different manufacturers viking swords. Gonna have to try it against h&h steel soon.

some qualifiers: no archery and no throwing weapons. but the basic weapons, long staff and sword can be modified.

i'll go with the greeks. me and the boys will be head-to-toe in the best armor at that time (closed helmet, full jacket and pants of leather overlain with beaten bronze). our staffs won't have to be 20 feet long; 10 feet is about right, with broad, sharpened steel blades.

the roman legionnaires may move faster because of lighter armor (and they're trained to move fast). but we have better protection. no running fight for us. my boys will just form a hedgehog formation: no blind sides. our spears will be in an alternating down-ready and upright-ready stance. anyone armed with anything less than 50" of blade will either get his legs hooked or his head caved in if comes near.

just started watching this forum,

anyone else here in the SCA? (medieval recreation group).

as far as the debate, and i know someone had to have said this before....any style works against pretty much any other. depends on skill.

i get to watch samurai v. roman v. vikings v. greeks v. highlanders v. cavaliers.....and i've never seen any style win by inherant methodology.

re: viking style: any documentation? most of the major viking groups prohibit two-sword (florentine) because it's not documentable.

me? i'd have to go w/ the Romans. one of the best professional armies in history, except for maybe Sparta.

"Fork v.s. Steak knife, who'll win ? " Well, I guess fork has more trapping and snaring options, however steak knife has thrust or slash...and we havedn't begun to consider food shield types...

i still play a lot. came i second in Aethelmearc crown (spring). not bad if you can take the strange folks. but it takes all kinds.

Hank- Your phalanx is going to get mighty tired and mighty warm holding that formation and wearing all that armour in the blistering Mediteranian sun all day. Eventually they'll have to move to water and shelter and when they do, the legion will nip at their flanks and force them to hedgehog again... then they just keep repeating if necessary.
