How often do you need to scrape off the old and start over again? Im using a cleaning and polishing compound i picked up from Lowes called Mibro 2 for hard metals. Satisfying results, nice polished edge to hair popping sharp, but it turns from grey to black after one session of stropping. Does this mean its clogged and loosing effectivness?
This is the first stuff i've tried so i cant compare to anything else. Also,is the green stuff mentioned alot here any better.

The green stuff from lowes is not the true green stuff (chromium oxide) that we all talk about but this is. http://www.woodcraft.com/product.aspx?ProductID=06L01&FamilyID=3112

The surface can turn very black and still work just fine its when the surface looks shiny with metal and is very slow at polishing is when it's time to start fresh. Your blade will also start sticking on the surface of the strop.

Back to compounds, the green chromium oxide is most likely much finer than the product you are using now and may be even faster at cutting the metal. I personally don't use any of the standard compounds, I like diamond compounds for their superior speed in cutting and finished sharpness. Here's a few to check out,
