When using a knife (long or short) as one would use a machete for clearing light brush would it be better to have a toothy or polished bevel?

I would think a toothy edge is the most versatile. For that kind of work a polished edge isn't going to last lond anyway. For my machetes I set the edge with a bastard file and finish with some 600 grit wet dry sandpaper.

Personally I would prefer a "toothy edge", but it depends on the knife and how much clearing you're doing. I would just prefer to have a machete myself. What knife are you talking about?

When clearing light brush, it would be better to have a machete, in my opinion.

This. Right tool for the job. I do better with a machete and this:
