When was this hatchet made?

I was given this hatchet. The elderly man who gave it to me said it is made by a sword maker named C. Hammond of Philadelphia. He also said it was circa Civil War.

I hold no illusions as to this being a Civil War period piece. To me it looks like a standard hatchet.

Any way to date it? Any other info would be appreciated.

Common with the Hammond pieces - when you look them up everyone sees he had a contract with the governmwnt to supply axes and hatchets and swords - so everyone automatically thinks any hammond piece is from the civil war - even though there were in business up until around the 1920s.....I would say yours is probably from the early 1900s - there were some different marks used - especially when the son came on board - but those are pretty uncommon.

You will notice if you have other hatchets to compare them to that Hammond made a hell of a product.
