Did the "cho creep" phenomenon become typical fare after or before the habaki type bolster? Thanks!

Dan :)

The cho creep phenomenon has been an ongoing thing. It's been more pronounced after the habaki bolster, and it seems as if the cho creep is becoming longer and longer. However, Berk, who coined the term "cho creep," noticed it as early as 1999 I think.

In response to your original question, the habaki bolster became standard in August 2000.

For those of us who are a little dense...

What exactly is a habaki type bolster? What other types are there? Any links to pics of habaki and non-habaki types?

Oops, I see Drdan has already steered you to some pics.

Comparison Picture
This is a pic I showed a while back. The top is an engraved Shop 1 15" AK, the bottom a recent AK with the habaki bolster. The end of the handles are lined up, the cho creep marked in yellow.

The habaki bolster started after Jim March sent a 200 year old katana over to show the kamis what a real katana should look like.

The habaki on the katana is to allow a tight fit at the top of the blade and then leave the rest of the blade easy to withdraw after the first inch or so of pull from the scabbard.

I guess the kamis decided to do the same to make it easier to fit the khuks to their scabbards.
