when will the new flash be available...

Hi Wayne,

Here's what I know as of today regarding production on the various Flash models!
  • Flash I & II: Both the straight and serrated of these models having been shipping for almost a couple months.
  • TiNi Flash I & II: Should start shipping in about two weeks. It will take awhile to saturate the market and most stores will elect not to carry these models. So these will likely be special order items.
  • All Alumunum Flashes: First of all, these are really, really nice knives! I've been playing with the various versions and can't get enough of them! In my opinion, they blow away the Zytel handled Flashes. We have all the parts in house are just gearing up production. When I get mine (I've been promised only a couple of days), I'll post pictures. Again, it will take awhile to saturate the market and most stores will elect not to carry these models. So these will likely be special order items.
I hope this has helped!

thanks ron, i do have a couple more questions. will the aluminum models be available in TiNi?
will the aluminum models be any thinner than the zytel models?
what will the price differences be?
thanks again:)

Hi Wayne,

Sorry, bud! :) All your answers are found in the Flash link in my prior post. But, being the customer service professional that I am (maybe "professional" should be in "quotes" ;) ), and not wanting to make an example out of you (you're taking this well, aren't you?), I'll assist you. I can even do so with the "list feature." But you did ask (3), not "a couple" questions! ;)
  • Yes.
  • No.
  • $30
It's been a long day and I'm ready to do home. :)

Hi Illiya,

Great to hear you picked up your Flash! Great knife, huh? You received our standard satin finished blade, though, since the black TiNi bladed models have yet to go into production.

Enjoy! :)

Hello Ron,
You are 100% correct. I ordered the TiNi finish
from botach.com last week. Last night, I received
an email that it had been delivered to my home. Upon getting home and opening the package, I found it was the standard finish - BIG dissapointment. Now I will have to return it and WAIT for a refund.
My impressions of the knife are, well, fair. In the various reviews I read on the knife, they mention a "Piston" to assist in opening and closing the knife. From what I could see, the motion of the blade is just assisted by a spring - and a weak one at that. If a finger with the LEAST amount of pressure touches the blade as it is opening, the blade stops two-thirds of the way open. Being such a small knife, it is almost impossible to hold the knife without touching the blade as it opens. Closing the blade is not a smooth motion, but that of grinding metal on metal - which it is. I applied a couple small drops of Sentry Solutions tuff glide, but the blade still opened weakly and had the same feel when closing. Maybe the larger Flash II performs better (?).
I am disapointed in this new knife, especially since I am a BIG fan of SOG products. I have given several Paratools as gifts, and have a PE14 in my pocket right now. :(

Hi Illiya,

I’m truly sorry for your disappointment. We’ve done a bit of talking here in the SOG Forum about the difference in philosophy of the opening of the Flash knives versus other assisted openers. You will find that the knife does open all the time, all the way. Opening it in the area of an obstruction is not necessarily a wise action, so the blade running into something while opening was never even a consideration for us during development. What was a consideration was have “near zero recoil.” That we did in amazing fashion. Being a big-time fan of automatic knives, I’m quite familiar with how they can kick. Being the knife innovators that we are, SOG just had to make a knife that didn’t buck like a Bronco and still completely do the assisted opening. The mechanism inside is quite ingenious and it functions completely well. But it just functions a bit differently. We could have “clocked” the spring to have it fly out at any speed we desired. We have it set at an amount that will not intimidate the “knife-shy.”

i love my flash knives and will order the new versions as soon as they are released(no pun intended:)
i had the same problem with the opening of my flash knives when i first recieved them. the problem was NOT the knives, but in the technique in which they are opened(ex. thumb following blade and stopping from opening, etc.) what i have found through experimenting with them is...
do NOT try to open the knife like a conventional thumb stud knife(do not push out, flip knife, wrist twist, etc), instead, push the thumb stud "UP", towards the top of the knife and do NOT let your thumb follow. actually, you just want to "bump" it enough to let the spring take over. for some, it might take some practice, but it is WELL worth the time. i like the function better than my switchblades(no, i am not giving them away:) i like the "no recoil" feature. my flash I is a lot faster than my flash II, i don't know why though, unless the desigh did not take into consideration the added mass/weight of the larger series, but both work great(although i do like the "speedier" flash I a bit better) i do wish they would come up with a different blade for the knife though(ast-34 or 154-cm would be nice with a design similar to the night vision with plain and serrated options... TiNi too!)

gee, i wish my new night vision and minix-ray would arrive(waiting for special orders to come in so the sogs can ship out). any chance the x-rays will be available with aluminum handles?
