Where and what to order?

Hi everybody! I have been reading these forums for about the past week. I am really interested in making my own knives and getting into the forging aspect of it. Currently, I am stationed in Iraq/Kuwait (depends if I am convoying or not). So, forging is out of the question for the next 7 months. But from reading the forums, I think I should start with some simple knive making kits supplied by TKS, etc. That will give me a good idea of how straight blade and lockback knives are made. I went onto there website and kinda got lost on the way. I am just looking for a simple kit that includes everything I will need to make both types of knives. Obviously, that will be two kits. I am limited in the room that I have in my area of operations to have sandpaper, etc. I gues I just want it to be ready to assemble since this will be the first time I will be doing a project of this type. Most of the kits I saw online need little parts added to the order. I am a little confused by this as I have never put a knife together or even welded before. Any suggestions would be helpful. I am eager, ready, and waiting. I would appreciate any help you may have to offer. Thanks, Bryan

Bryan, pardon my lack of polite on the first post.

Welcome to Shoptalk! If you're armed services, thank you from America!

The reason I showed you that link is that the kits are good quality, have a range of difficulties, and at the bottom of each listing will have suggestions for any other parts not included in that particular kit that you may want. the parts fit pretty good and will be a good introduction to how things go together while not being demanding of specialty tools. The people that run the company are good people and responsive to customers.

You can get by on many of the kits with no more than a wood rasp or files and several grits of quality sandpaper. Poke around the whole site, as there are additional handle scales so you can switch handle materials, etc.

While we may not be familiar with the specific kits, there's little about knifemaking that someone here can't answer.

You need help, speak up!

We pray for your safety.

Thanks for your kind words. I really like the setup of the site. My buddy and I are looking at it now. I think I may actually order something tonight from them. I am def. going to have to order some small files, etc, but it will be worth it to start learning the basics this way. Have a good day and I will have to post what I make once I am done with it.

You most likely will need a set of Torx drivers, too.
Welcome to the BF. Our son is in AFG right now. Take care.
