Where are all the experts on fakes when you need them

I wish to use an example to make a point. Often knives are labeled as fakes only through a lack of understanding of an entire subject. I offer for example 280005454088 . Now I have no intention of voicing my opinion to the buyer or seller however I would like to use this auction to explain why in this instance this knife is incorrect. To begin with the gaff toothpick fishing knife was made by Ulster not Schrade. Most for sears while they had an Ulster Tang they had a JC Higgins or Ted Williams etch. They had yellow handles and stainless bolsters. I have explained how these knives came about while Henry Baer and Ted Williams were fishing for Tarpon in Florida in a previous posting. In any event They were never made by Schrade, some came out of the factory unmarked ( usually considered seconds) perhapes some came in without tangs employees usually ended up with these I know I had one however it still had the yellow handles. Also indirectly mine came from an old emplyee who had liberated it. The staglon handles on this one ( now up for auction ) were were only used on the Schrade Walden model 209 Old Lunker. However the handles fit the Ulster Gaffer perfectly. Now I do not know if the seller has any idea that these handles were either put on by an employee or some one else either to sporterize an Ulster Gaffer or to repair one, since these handles were available, and the original yellow ones probably werent . In any event while the knife is an anomality ( and interesting) it is not a proto type it is an unmarked put together taken and assembled knife. it is a classic example of what I have said before never be surprised by what you find. By the way the parts on these exchange very nicely in fact I have a Yellow handled stainless bolstered version under the Schrade Walden tang. NOW HOW COULD THAT BE AFTER WHAT I SAID???? Well I broke the blade on my unmarked gaffer which I used to use. I have 4 and I used to use that one since it was unmarked. When I went to have it repaired I used a Schrade Walden 209 old Lunker for the blade. Because it was the only part that i could find that fit perfect. Perhapes I should sell it as a prototype. It would seem that when the handles cracked on the one this guy has, someone else also realized that a few rivits, and the parts interchanged perfectly .

Now it is still a nice knife however it is not a Schrade and it was never a for sale by Schrade knife or a prototype. I doubt the seller knows this however who knows this could have been done 40 years ago or yesterday. My feeling is that the buyer should be given all the information available by the seller this may or may not be the case in this situation I don't know or care. In any event the buyer should know what he is buying irreguardless. I usually bid gaffers ( I am addicted to the model) however I will not be bidding this one since if I want one like it I will just have a set of Old Lunker handles put on one of mine. LT. PS This is a classic example of how I get in trouble, perhapes I should make trouble my middle name. L Trouble T,

here is a couple I have on the site of LT's collection

Larry seems to have saved a pic of a bunch of mine here are a couple of new ones. the Gaffer came from an elderly man who got the knife as a gift and never used it original box how weird is that? the other is a rare cell Schrade Cut Co. It is off the wall ( an expression I use for anything from the original Schrade collection.) For me this has been a very difficult pattern to acquire under this original marking this one is a dandy. I like the "off the wall" expression, LT! Musta been something to see when they were all "on the wall". I've only seen the remaining Case collections, and the smaller collection at Queen. Let's do an "off the wall thread"!

Thats too bad, I've been on the look-out for a Gaffer ever since I saw the ones LT has but at those prices I may have to do without.

Well one went recently for about 60 plus dollars another under 100 I was surprised and since I have a couple was not keeping a close eye on them, they are not (due to having a few) a primary concern . I have paid upward to 200 so that shows how clever I am. Summer is the time to buy on ebay. Good hunting LT.
