Where are Leatherman tools made? They say USA, but the box doesn't specify. Are they made here and assembled somewhere else?

Don't remember the whole story, but there was some sort of lawsuit that caused Leatherman to stop marking their tools as Made in U.S.A. I believe it had something to do with percentages. Similar to Gerber now marking their tools as made in the U.S.A. of "foreign and domestic parts".

They're made in Oregon. In the past some implements have been made in other countries but the tools are accepted as being produced in the USA.

Here's a link to a good summary of the lawsuit and subsequent reversal of the verdict:Link.

More specifcally - they are made in Portland Oregon , They are located just off Airport way and about 120th ave. I am a long time resident of East County and a proud Leatherman Owner. I personally Own #198/200 of the rare and Illusive Tenth Anniversary Survival Tool ,24kt gold overlayed in a Walnut plaque. :-)

Interesting that if they are made in the U.S.A., that Leatherman wouldn't want to mark them as such. Me thinks there has to be a little more to the story. I was at Walmart the other night looking at a new Wave with a price tag of $70 something dollars. I honestly would be more inclined to put that kinda money on it if it was stamped Made in the U.S.A. (not just assembled in Oregon from "foreign and domestic" parts).

It's a legal situation, as I understand it.. There are some components (not for MTs in particular) that are simply no longer made in USA, such as certain types of fasteners. All states recognize this and allow for a small percentage offshore parts or processing and still qualify as "Made in USA." Acceptable percentages vary, but California has tougher DC regulations than most. Leatherman had to pay a fine and not label Made in USA for their products sold in California. Leatherman could market their products in all other states based on percentage of domestic content, but to simplify distribution, they dropped the term for all their stuff sold anywhere.
