In the last couple years before I left SOG (I left in January 2003), they were making a shift to Taiwanese made knives. I'd guess that most new products introduced around that time had most of their components made there (some assembly was in the US). Knives that come to mind where all the X-42 models and the Field Pup.
If I were to guess on where these new fixed blades were made, I'd say Taiwan.
I too am not a fan of Taiwanese made knives, but let me play devils advocate. First hand, I can say that the primary considerations were well met: manufacturing quality, excellent materials, low QC issues, reliable delivering of product, and very competitive price. Much better than I'd anticipated. SOG was careful to select Taiwanese factories which were state-of-the-art and leading Taiwan in the knife production industry.
But, I am spoiled by the supreme blades made in Seki, Japan. Not much surpasses those knives.
Of course, Spencer made the decision to move production of a number of products to Taiwan for both a lower price point and better profits. In the knife industry, knives with lower price points sell much, much better!
