Just got one, and like it, but can't see the bushings. Are they inlaid in the handle? Did I get a weird one w/o them? Thanks!

Some may not have washers or need them. You can make for a very smooth action polished steel against polished steel without the need for washers. Its just titanium and certain other grainy feeling materials like G10 that get washers sometimes. There were no washers in my Ocelot when I took the blade out. Its a good thing trust me. The washers are a royal pain to get back in place to put things back together anyway. Be glad you don't have any.

I just put new blades in a the Delica 4 and the Endura 4. The Delica had two 1-2 thou. thick nylon washers on each side of the blade. The washers were almost transparent. They Endura had one .005 phosphorous bronze washer on each side of the blade. I just made the replacement blades exactly the same thickness as the ones replaced. The tension on the pivot is adjustable; so if it worked when I got it; it worked the same when I was finished. I lochtite the screws in position, at the right tension, for the lockbar and the blade...Take Care...Ed

Jurphaas needed a Damascus blade for his Delica. I used Devin Thomas SS Ladder pattern Damascus on the Delica. The Endura got a Carbon steel San Mai pin stripe Damascus Clad Blade. I am bringing the knives with me to Europe. I expect the the Deilca will disappear in Jur's pocket. We will probably have to sweet talk Jur for pictures.

My son Martin has been helping me with heat treating and surface grinding of tiles. I'll have a bunch of the 6 Spyder Spyderco tiles. I'll bring examples of other Mosaic patterns in tile and loaf slabs. I'll try to bring materials that exemplfy different techniques and processes of Mosaic and Damask Steel.

Under the thread "The Napa show" in Custom Knives forum is a picture by Sharp by Coop of a Bob Weinstock piece. The steel was and eight bar twist loaf. I used a Manfred Sachs billet arrangement technique. Bob carves an overlapping layered pattern into the steel. This carving really accentuates the pattern of the steel...Take Care...Ed

Man Ed, one of these days I would sure be honored to have one of your Damascus blades in one of my knives!!
I would like to see pictures of the knives you are talking about here.

It's funny... Spyderco says they've found bronze washers in every D4 they've taken apart, but everyone who's taken one apart on bladeforums or knifeforums has found nylon.

In any case they'll send the right washers promptly if you contact them, and taking apart your D4 or E4 will not void the warranty. (these two knives being the only exception)

I found bronze on mine...shiny bronze.
Cheers,

My Endura 4 works great so I've never taken it apart. Gotten curious a few times, but afraid I might not get it back right :)

You open the knife.

You close the knife.

It's smooth.

Why care what kind of washer you have as long as the knife works properly? You can get experts that like nylon and experts that like bronze. Guess what...they are both right.

Catalog specifications can change, this disclaimer is always printed somewhere in the catalog.

My Delica 4 has nylon ones.

Oddly, in fact, there was 2 nylon ones on the right side, and 1 on the left.

Another question... is the washer on the male end of your pivot screw "bent", or ridged, like a locking washer?

It makes it so that I can barely screw in the pivot pin without making the action stiff. I eventually had to locktite the sucker in so it wouldn't wiggle its way loose.

i just took apart my delica 4 PE and it had FOUR nylon bushings -- two on each side. I cleaned everything, lightly oiled everything and put it back together, with two washers on each side of the blade, and it's smooth as silk now. first time taking apart a knife, and if i can do it, anyone can! :)

It sounds like the first production run(s) got nylon by mistake, and everything Spyderco has on hand now has bronze. All of the early adopters on this website likely have knives from the earliest production run(s). Just a theory.

That was my thought as well.
