Where are they really made?

Following up on my previous post about not knowing where so many brands are really made, I just visited the Linder website and noted an entire section of "Knives Made Worldwide" To my great disappointment I found several of my Linders there. I still don't know where they were really made. I am trying to decide if I still like them as much as I did before I knew.

Made worldwide brings China to my mind. Thing about China, same with Tawain & Japan, is that they will make the knife a company ask for. This mean's inexpensive to expensive. The Chinese economy has/is grown to the point that knife manufacturers have been able to get the latest in CAD, CAM, and other capital letter machines. This allows them to make a decent piece of cutlery.

There was something you liked about these knives to purchase them, and it is still there despite where the knive's are made. I say enjoy them like you did before!!

I see a lot of posts concerned with where something is made; many people refuse to buy knives made in China, or refuse to believe a quality product could even be made there for example.

Manufacturers are going to produce things wherever it makes economic sense for them to do so, a good manufacturer will make sure the quality meets standards regardless of whether it comes from China or South Africa or wherever.

If you liked the knives enough to buy them, shouldn't that be the most important thing? If it's really important that your knife be made in Solingen (or Sekki, or Golden Colorado, or wherever) then I guess I would make absolutely sure where it was made before buying, and be prepared to pay a premium. Or if it's affordable, maybe buy from individual bladesmiths who do their own work.

If this bothers you so much then why aren't you doing your research before you buy? I still have no idea WHY it bothers you but whatever floats your boat.

Clearly I perceive greater value in a knife made in Germany than one made in China. How 'bout you?

Seems like a perfectly fair concern to have.

It's true that there is more to a knife than simply where it was made. There are the why it was made there and what circumstances caused it to be made there. Sometimes the answers to those questions upset a potential buyer to the point that they do not want to be a piece of that puzzle. I count myself as one of those, regardless of the simple product at the end.

To each his own, though.

Why is it made in China has to do with it being less expensive to do so since the labor cost is so low. If the overall finished knife is good enough to merit the buyer's approval, then it means a greater profit for the company.

Let's not go into the politics of all this as the mods will not tolerate it.

I've bought Made in Germany junk, and Made in China works of art. The former's reputation - like Made in America's - no longer is valid in many cases.

a lot of knives can't be mass-produced so if that's the only advantage china has over others, it doesn't follow.

i will feel better if it's made in a country where good steel is made (and cheaply.) one thinks of places like sweden, finland, germany, spain.

Certainly we are all entitled to our own perceptions.

Is your issue with your Linders that were made "worldwide" (as Shotgun noted, it would have been simple enough to check before you bought them if it is important to you) or is your issue with Linder as a whole, now that you have found they are willing to produce a product of what you perceive to be lesser quality?

Perception is everything. Back when surgeons used real steel scapels thebest ones came from Taiwan.

You may as well strip naked and throw your electronics and computer away then. Stop driving because I "heard" that oil comes from overseas too!

8Cr13MoV and the various other Chinese steels have proven themselves quite capable in day to day tasks.

Also, China was making quality knives and cutting implements well before any of those countries existed.
