It was with a sense of disbelief that I read the initial short notice about the site being purged, and dismay when I read the initial attempts to save what is a very personal history for a lot of folks here...most of the 5 or so pages now comprising the historian thread are far too technical for a guy like myself who only (and barely) uses a computer to email, participate on sites like this, and access technical manuals at work, period....could someone give a brief layman's synopsis of what has been accomplished and how it might be accessed by computer illiterati? I would very much appreciate this....thank you.....

If I am asking something super-duper triple-top secret, it seems someone could at least tell me that's classified information and I have no need to know...even better would be a "we have managed to save the stuff and will get with everyone later when we figure out how to arrange for folk to read it."....or even a "we'll get back with you", a back-channel note, something....

I believe...(and now that a response is being given, someone is sure to come along and correct me)....that the "OK" has been given for Spark to start purging the H.I. forum. I would imagine that if the OK was given, everything has been backed up.

Thanks for the reply.....I haven't been around here much until recently....bought a khukuri/kukuri/etc from Bill before the internet thing via old fashioned landline telephony, and very much enjoyed my conversations with him which included dealing with my concerns about exploitation of poorer countries....he impressed the heck out of me then, and after going through and reading the stuff on the HI site after it was up, impressed me even more....and I was very saddened when I read here that I would never again have the opportunity to have any more conversations with him, and very much wanted to see some of the earlier history saved.....

See LENGTHY thread, "Do we need a historian . . ." -- just down list.

Yessir, as I implied in my original query, tried wading that river already, and most of it is Greek to me, and I don't speak, read, or write Greek....that's why I was looking for a quick layman's explanation of where things were at, literally and figuratively....
