Where are you getting your 1084?

I was wondering where you guys might be getting your 1084 steel? I'm a new maker and started off with about 10 feet of .250"x1" and I'm about half way through my supply. It seem a bit hard to find. I see a place called New Jersey Steel has some but was told to avoid them as their shipping costs are astronomical and the steel may show up warped and not in quality shape. Any input or advice is greatly appreciated!

I don't know where you heard that. Aldo at NJSB has been the go-to guy for most of us for years. His shipping is reasonable, and steel may or may not have a curve in it from any source. Being fully spheroidized, it is easily straightened. I haven't bought steel from any other supplier in ten years.

(Meant in the most gentle and respectful way) if you can't straighten a warped bar of steel, you have no business making a knife. You can do it!

NJSB is the go-to place for 1084. Admiral Steel is another source if you are ok with 1080 rather than 84. Generally speaking, simple high-carbon steel is rare and only available from a dozen or so specialty resellers.

I buy all my steel from Aldo, other than 1095 because I have my own source for that. I've never been disappointed with what I've bought from Aldo.

Aldo is the Man!

He will look after you if you ever have problems with your steel, which is a rare occurrence.

Shipping cost to Canada is much worse than what you will need to pay........I buy from Aldo.

New Nersey Steel Baron is the place to go... though I did swallow a little hard at the last shipping bill. Not that it's Aldo's fault. We are shipping STEEL through UPS.

Too bad USPS doesn't have a 4x4x48" flat rate tube for $20 or something. My NJ stuff always comes FedEx.

Appreciate the information gentlemen! I feel a lot better about ordering from New Jersey!

Aldo is EXCELLENT to do business with. Shipping rates are ridiculously high for anything. I have paid much more for a lot less than a nice load of steel from Aldo.

Shipping on 5 bars is not too much more than a single bar. So order as much as you can to take the sting out of it.

Never ordered from Aldo, but if you're looking for options, I get mine from Kelly Cupples, but I get it directly and don't have to pay for shipping, so not sure how he compares.

Kelly's steel is great if you are forging or making Damascus, not so much if you are doing stock removal. The last batch I got was cupped pretty severely. Though, it is an incredible bargain--I got 32 feet of 1/8" shipped to my door for $100. It makes fantastic knives if you have the means to flatten the steel.

As much as I like Aldos product, his shipping charges are OUTRAGOUS! It should not cost 50 dollars to ship three 1/8x2x48" pieces of steel...

I know they don't show it on their website but I'd talk to Alpha Knife Supply and see if they could maybe order you some--shipping is a flat 18-ish bucks up to 70 pounds. Everything I've ordered from them has been top notch.

Yes, that is why it took me a while to place my first order. I waited till I could afford enough steel to get a good rate for the qty of steel. Ordering just one bar is not the way t go, order 3 or more and the shipping is more reasonable.
