Where best to carry blades?

When you all head to the woods, where do you carry your larger knives. I have seen some that carry their lg knives and axes lashed to the outside of thier packs. I have had some say they should be carried inside the pack.

What's your preference?

I carry mine mounted in the middle of the shoulder strap on my pack, so as it is easily accessible by either hand no matter what other crap I sling on my shoulder or stash on my person. I wear my pack for 99% of the day though, so for those who spend alot of time with their pack off on their hikes it would probably be better to find a spot on their bodies.

I carry mine in my packs sidepocket, i prefer my knife within reach. Wouldnt usually recommend it, but this particular Osprey pack that i have has a very deep and tight nylon-stretch sidepocket where my knife sits extremely securely.

The largest knife I have as a 6'' blade.I always carry it on my belt.
The axe or machete goes strapped to the outside of my pack :)

To me, it depends upon the length of the blade and the sheath the knife is in. I have some knives that are 18" or longer that I can carry on my hip comfortably because of the sheath set up. I also have some that I strap to a pack because they are so cumbersome on the hip, again, it depends upon the sheath design. Experiment.
I will always have a knife easily accessible no matter what, though. It doesn't make any sense to strap a knife on a pack that requires the pack to be removed to access.

I carry my M9LE inside my pack and my Meaner Streets on my belt. That may change when I get a sheath for the M9.

I used to carry my machete inside my pack with the handle sticking out. I only intended to get at it when we made camp. I don't like a long blade flopping off my belt against my thigh when I'm hiking. If I needed it for bushwhacking, I would take it out and carry it in my right hand.

For the same reason I carry my belt knife on my weak side (left) because I don't like anything brushing or interfering with my strong right hand. Just my personal preference.

I carry in a the baldric style. slung over my shoulder. like in this pic.

I do not like it on my pack I want it on my like TF. But if it is on mine belt anything longer than 7" is hard to get in and out when sitting down and even kneeling. but when it is slung over my shoulder for me getting to my bigger knives is easyer. I have tried different carry set ups, but for me the baldric is the best way I like to carry my bigger knives. I can still carry my pack just fine also with the baldric set up. Try differnt carry methods to see what you like the best.

I dont own any large blades....

I carry on my belt, or on this Survival Sheath Systems shoulder rig I traded into. Highly reccomend them, its fantastic, and well made.

I carry on my person, if at all possible, right side belt. If I am hiking where I may pass a bunch of sheeple, I'll cover it up or carry it in my pack. My axe is strapped to the outside or inside for the same reasons.

Where you decide to carry them, carry them there all the time. Muscle memory is key.

If I'm carrying a large knife (like my Machax) I also use a baldric, like Bryan.

Depending on which smaller knife I'm carrying, I either wear it like the Mora in the picture or on a diagonal, with the handle down.

Depends on which knife it is.

My M-43 kukri I wear on my belt over the right hip. I am experimenting with making a baldric for it. Sometimes I will attach it to my backpack as well.

RC4 generaly horizontal accross the back or horizontal left front.

Most other of my knives are worn on the right hip due to sheath design.

Jeff Crowner made my RUPA and it is a BEAUTIFUL big blade.

It is carried edge forward on the right side.

The Philosphy is...

If you need it fast, an upward slashing stroke out of the sheath will defend you.

If you DON'T need it fast, you have time to turn it around, don't you?

So, on my belt, fairly high, edge forward will always be the way I carry my fixed blades from now on.

Doc Canada, I really like your set up for the baldric.

Have you ever used a bigger type straight knife ?

The reason I ask is I am working on a knife right now for a fellow who wanted his knife more like the Kuri / machax type of knife.
Is the curved knife a better al round knife for most cutting chores do you think?
I have my MEGA One Zero ( straight blade) and then I have a cold steel Kuri type of knife. so I have used both for trail clearing and stuff like that. Both work, but I have been thinking about the curved knife design more and more since I started on this curved knife for a customer I have.

After working on his, I am going to make one for me, but with some changes. (ie. Slanted guard, longer blade, narrower blade than his, stuff like that).

I have a old cold steel kuri type knife and like it, but it is just not right in my thinking. So I have a idea in my head and I hope to start on it in January sometime.

Again, I am just wondering what your thoughts are.

When I look at your set up It looks like the handle is easyer to get at.
Also do you ever wear that set up while canoeing?

Where do I carry my (larger) knives?
On trips; in the Jeep packed with the cooking gear.
When backpacking; on my left pack strap (used to carry a 12" machete lashed to the pack but stopped carrying it due to lack of need/use).
For day hikes/hunting on my left hip; the .45 rides on my right.

Enjoy!
