I'm looking for a good machete for use this summer.I will be doing typical machete type activities,cutting brush,vines,chopping up snakes (

),etc.
Where can I get one for less than 50 bucks?

While I am at it, does anyone have any experience with the Cold Steel Hawks? I like the looks of em, of course it will be used for firewood,not killing.

Tell me what you think,
MAURICE
TIA.

It would be pretty easy to get a good machete for under $50.00. Check out Brigade Quartermaster or Smoky Mountain Knife Works. The both sell the Ontario line. I got a 12 inch Ontario cutlass machete, with sawback, just recently. It cost $25.00, including shipping, and is a good blade. Tha sawback is actually pretty handy, and the handle is stout and comfortable. The only downside to these machetes is they'll either come with no sheath, or a cheapie canvas sheath that will give you nightmares. They also sell, at extra cost, the issue plastic machete sheath. They only come in 18 inch length, but you could cut and melt the end for a 12 inch machete. I prefer the 12 because it's easier to tote. I suppose if one were to cutting sugar cane all day, the 18 might be better. :~}

As for the Cold Steel `hawks. Every time I watch "Last of the Mohicans", I want a `hawk. They look great, but I've always used a big bowie, machete or khukuri for chopping. But, I've got a decent hardware store hatchet with the same basic head as the Rifleman's `hawk: hammer head and cutting edge. If I can find myself getting into using it, I might just plunk some money down on the real thing. But I'm still not real sure on just sticking it in my belt the way they did in the movie. Could cause an embarassing and painful moment, it would seem.

MAURICE, I can get you a U.S.Miltary issue 18" Ontario machete with issue polymer sheath for $25. E-mail me.

I'm a big fan of the CS hawks.
They do need some work on the edge to make them ready to go (I'd gladly pay extra if CS would put the same effort into the edge on a hawk as they do for their knives!)
They're built like a tank (I don't know how you could break one!), and the price can't be beat. I've got a custom hawk on it's way ... manufactured by Tai Goo (the man is amazing!), and I am planning on another from ATC ... but don't sell the CS products short.
They aren't as sexy

... but you'll never regret the cost/value equation.
