I've been looking to buy some fltz after reading about it on the forum. I'd love to try it out before I blow $20 on a big bottle. I see pictures every once in a while of a $0.99 packet but I can't find any where I can purchase that. Does anyone have the name of a national hardware store that might carry it. Online searches of home depot, loses, and ace are starting blanks.

Welcome

You can get a sample here

If you're into knives, guns, cars, watches etc do yourself a favor and just order the large tube. A little goes a long way. Just remember that it is a fine abrasive so it may alter a finish.

Just wanted to say thanks for this! I too like to try stuff out before spending a bunch of money and it is nice to see a company make it easy.

Alternatively, I use Autosol. Some years back I found small tube package in one of the supermarket (approx slightly larger than tooth paste from hotel room). Not sure if it's available widely.

Also fine abrasive, similar to white compound.

All good suggestions. To add one more: I also use Brasso. It too is a fine abrasive that has chemicals added. It does a pretty swell job as well. It is worth taking a look-see.

Brasso might work to a limited extend due to it's abrasive is not as hard as Al Ox in the white compound (Autosol, MAAS, etc). It's meant for brass which is much softer than steel. There was old thread discussing brasso, I'd suggest to check first.
I just remember MAAS is similar to Autosol, but it doesn't come in small tube.

Brasso uses silica as the abrasive, which is not nearly as hard as the aluminum oxide in polishes made for hardened & stainless steels; maybe ~1/3 as hard, at most. It's barely harder than the steel itself (& may actually be softer than some steel alloys). This is why it's better suited for brass and other softer metals. If used with knives, I'd reserve it for the brass/nickel bolsters & liners. Simichrome, Flitz, Mother's Mag & Autosol are more effective for the blades, as for polishing, stropping, patina/rust/oxide removal, etc. They'll also do great with the brass & nickel as well.
