Do any of you guys know where I can find some nice bolos and blades in Metro Manila? Are there any places where I can get some Igorot and Muslim weapons? I am thinking of going to the Philippines this summer and I want to make the most of this opportunity. Thanks.

Chris,
I was in Cebu and Manilla in August of 98 for the Weekaf World Stick Fighting Championships. One of my objectives was too find some of the weapons you are talking about.

You will have to look around alot and ask "Jeepny" drivers and Taxi drivers where the OLD "Kris" is and Muslim Weapons might be.
I had to go to Mindano to find stuff. Ifound an Antique store w/ a difficult older woman who owns it. She was asking when I converted
the money into US dollars something between $7,000.00 and $5,000.00 a Blade. But I found the real deal.

There are some Collectors if Indonsian and Filipino weapons named Dave and Leona Schmiedt.
Their phone is: 209.464.0101
I met them at a knife show and their prices
are far more reasonable than what I could buy in the Philipines.
Youll pay between $400.00 and $800.00 for a decent Battle Kris and a Baroong is about $400.00 as well. They also have Kamulans,
Pinute's etc.
Hope you have a great time and good luck.

A couple hours outside of Manila is Batangas. There is a small industry of knife making there. Along the road there are numerous stands selling locally made machete's, butterfly knives and swords. Its cheap because it is locally made.

To find real Muslim weapons, you must go south like Tamishigiri did and spend a lot of money.

Tamishigiri, I was in Manila in July, 1998 for the Pekiti-Tirsia World Congress.

Cheers,

Damon,
Cool man I wish I was there for that !

I went w/ Alan Montoya who happened to win the Masters and beat out a Filipino master Joe ....
I stayed at Alan's niece's condo in Cebu and train w/ the Canette's for a few days.
Loved it can't wait to go back.
We are training in Pekiti as well at Inosanto's when Dan feels like it or has a guest or seminar. Along w/ something like 27 other forms of Indonesian/ Filipino styles. It's all Good ! :-{)

When the family goes down to the golf courses me and my father go down to batanggas to check out some stuff.. although nice I think you will find better blades if you go deepr into batanggas proper or down south. ALso It helps if you have a local be with you as soe of these people really like ripping off foreigners.

I mean I had a city accent and they were already giving me a hard time. Most of the fun is part of the bargaining but be careful as you are in a shop of edged weapons

Chris22,
When I went home for the second time I was also looking for moro weaponry. I stayed in Manila and one of my uncles who knows his way around said that he found a kris for me in Quiapo from a muslim vendor. Converted into dollars I think it was about $120.00 which wasn't too bad. I ended up not getting it because he only told me the morning of my departure and I couldn't get the money to him in time, although he was willing to brave the trecherous manila traffic.

Hope I was of some help. Good luck in your search. Oh yeah there's a place in Green Hills shopping center that sells martial arts parafenalia. They did carry a wide array of sticks from kamagong, bahi, nara etc. and videos for dirt cheap...
