Where can I buy cpm3v

If no one else has a source, try searching on "Crucible Service Centers" and call the Dallas office and ask for Bruce DaVita.

It's a little pricey, two 18"-1/8"-11/2" pieces, $38.72, plus packaging, plus shipping, plus tax for a total of $54.13.

Heck CPM3V ain't such a bad deal from Crucible.

Six feet of plain ole O1 (1 1/2 in. wide) from Texas Knifemakers at $8.95/foot is almost 54 bucks, and that's before shipping.

That is actually cheaper than I thought it was.
I wish there was somewhere a person could order the stuff online. I just hate buying stuff over the phone.
Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

Me too, since I'm outside of the United States making a call to Crucible means long distance charges for me, so an online seller would be appreciated.

If you're talking about CPM S30V, I ordered it from Admiral steel by email and Fax. 1/8" x 1" x 6 feet for $59. Go to the Admiral web site and send them an email. You can also download a .pdf pricelist for all their steel.

'Course, it comes from Crucible anyway. ;)

Out of curiosity,Why 3V? It is only a tool steel, and only a little better than D2 as a blade steel in my thinking. Is there something I have missed on this steel? It would seem that CPM S30V would be superior, unless you did not want it to be stainless,or needed the extra toughness.

The extra toughness of cpm3V allows you to girnd a thinner edge that cuts with less resistance while still being just as strong. A thin edge with a small secondary bevel also makes for easier sharpening as you have less material to remove.

3v is ridiculously hard after heat treat. I notice a big difference grinding it compared to S30v. And scratches are a bear to get out. Where it outshines D2 is in lateral strength...... It's about 10 times stronger, therefore far superior for prying.

3V would be excellent for any knife, unless corrosion resistance is high on your list.

3V is one of the toughest knife steels you can get.

You can grind it very thin and get awesome performance from it.

It is NOT only good for specialty tools. It will make an excellent knife with the proper heat-treat and edge geometry.

It is, however, not good for a high finish knife. If you're looking to put a 1200x hand-rubbed finish on a blade, this is not the steel for you.

I'm sure Jason already knows all of this.

Jason, call Crucible @ 800-365-1168 and ask for Rhonda. She is very friendly and will make it easy on you.

They'll have a thickness "range" You can't just ask for 1/8" You will have to speficy something such as 0.100-0.125"

You'll like 3V :D

Getting back to the topic has anyone any leads on where to get the CPM-3V?

Also, I've seen that other companies also have their own powder metallurgy steels, has anyone used any of them for knives? Looking at their websites, I get the impression that they only deal with other companies and not to individual knifemakers.

You beat me to it Bill. Chuck sent me an email a couple weeks ago saying that they had just ordered some and were going to be stocking cpm 3v, s30v, s90v, and 154cm. I'm not sure if they have it yet but it should be there in the next couple weeks at least.
The Bybees are great people to deal with and I highy recomend them.
