Where can I buy just a katana blade

not sure about what price or quality you are looking for, but i think that kriss cutlery sells just blades

I'm not sure about the current price (it will be good though) and the quality is top notch for a using blade, from Kriss. They are hard to beat.:)

Atlanta Cutlery has two different Katana
blades for sell :
one is a hand forged carbon steel-$44 approx.
the other is of Damascus steel-$240 approx.

These blades are made in India and are tempered.
Their web site is www.atlantacutlery.com

I bought the $44 carbon steel blade and attached
a handle. I use it to practice with and have
cut a few mulberry limbs up to approx. 3/4-1"
diameter with it, results were ok, comparable to
a machete. The steel in the
blade seems tough enough, but is only so-so
as far as edge retention goes. The only thing I
can compare it to would be my machetes.
This might be a good way to go for a "beater"
sword to practice with for not to much money.
Hope this is helpful.

Paul Chen makes forged japanese swords in shirasaya (a bare wooden storage scabbard). From memory his swords are distributed in the US by CAS Iberia, but I don't know how much they cost.

If your friend is looking for something much finer than the above, but not at the multi-thousand dollar cost of a Bell, Clark, or Graham katana blade, he should consider Rob Patton of http://pattonknives.com . Rob has been making some truly beautiful claypacked forge folded Japanese style blades of late. They have classical lines, gorgeous hamon, are beautifully finished, and I have personally tested several of them and they cut and withstand impact through dense targets like demons.

GarethB is correct Paul Chen does make high quality bare
blades.Depending on where you look the prices are still
pretty high depending on the Model that you purchase.

Hello,
Kris Cutlery sells only the blade, and the price is $75,00, the quality is OK, high carbon steel, same quality of regular 29" katana.

I think that for a baginner blade the Kris Cutlery is the way to.
The CAS Iberia blades in Shira are the same blades they have on
the finished swords.
