4' x 8' OR 4' X 4' sheet of 440C or similar 5/32" - 3/16" thick? I have requested quotes from several companies I've found online and have still not found where to get this. I am thinking it must be available, but maybe not ... ?? Anyone?

I know that Admiral steel carries sheets of 440, but not sure if the sizes match what you're seeking. Most of the stock they sell is sheared from sheet or rolls.

If you've not purchased it before, be ready for severe sticker shock.

Here's a link to their page on 440C: http://www.admiralsteel.com/shop/

Ed,
First let me say thanks for your response. I'll check them out. Although I already looked at their website I didn't call them because I didn't find that they offered it in sheets. As far as sticker shock, I'm not sure how, but I did manage to get past it. ;)
Second, let me say ... Wow! I have been admiring your knifemaking expertise for many years and am thrilled to be "rubbin' elbows" with you through the forum. I love the internet! :D
Third, I'd like to say "Thank You" for all the enjoyment your work has given me over the years. TRUE Craftsmanship, Sir.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: There have been those "lean" years in which all I could do was buy the various knife magazines and admire the work of others. Fortune, hard work, and those blessings which we can find if we look for, have brought me to a point in my life I can finally enjoy knifemaking the way I have always wanted to.
Fourth, and last, I'd like to post a link to one of your pages for others who may not have had the privilege to visit one of, IMO, the best pages on your website. Many would envy the obviously special relationship you shared with your Dad: http://www.caffreyknives.net/Memorial.html

Sincerely,
Larry Powell

I can't imagine what you're going to do with a plate that big. Please tell. ;)

Los Angeles,

For years I've been trying   :foot:   at making knives and have never sold even one. Have only made about a dozen or so, but I always get the same response - "Wow! How much do you want for it?" They have never been for sale - just made them as gifts. I still haven't even made one that I've managed to keep for myself. That's about to change. :) I have no intention of keeping it a secret or making a big deal about it - I want to take it to the next level. I don't have anyone here in Houston that I know personally to "apprentice" under (ALL offers WILL be considered - LOL! :D ), so I am going to try a few "production runs". I plan to have certain CAD files of my own designs (three "sets" of matching design - Bowie, Hunter/Skinner, and Fighter) cut out on a waterjet and do all the rest; except heat treat, myself. It may still be a few months bringing it all together, but my goal is 10 knives on the first shot. (I realize that the size I am looking for will produce more than that quantity, but if all goes well, I'll take a second run at it and continue till all the blanks I have cut out are used up.) If I produce anything that I am satisfied with enough to put my name/logo on (my avatar is my logo), then I'll offer them for sale here through the forum. I am also entertaining the idea of doing a WIP thread since those are some of my favorite posts here on the forum. BTW - Thanks to all of you who've posted WIPs - I love to learn from what you post!

Answer your question, Los Angeles? ;)

Jim,
Thanks for the referral. We sell lots off 440-C sheet and strips for the knife industry. We sell to almost all of the production companies and distributers like Admiral Steel and Midwest just to name two. Distributers are probably where you will get the best price for small quantities but we do keep some on the shelf for emergencies. We also produce D-2, 154-CM and all of the CPM grades including CPM S35-VN. As with the 440-C, you will probably get the best deal with distributers since they buy 100 to 1,000 pounds at a time from our mill.
Bob

PS, Beautiful clean looking knives on your site.

Soon usaknifemakerssupply will be the next distributor for the Niagara Supply. At least we keep pusng Tracy on it. He will probably have it in 4" by 36"sheets.

After I posted this, I received a PM from Stan Buzek (SBuzek) with an invitation to visit his shop. Stan is about a 30 minute drive from my house and I visited his shop last weekend. Stan's a nice guy and answered all the questions I put to him. He also has a nice layout for his shop and is a very knowledgeable guy (IMO) regarding knife making. I enjoyed the visit and was able to pick up several good pointers that will improve my knifemaking. To say "Thank you" I made Stan a couple of vinyl decals - one for the back window of his truck and one for his shop door. These decals are two colors (white over silver) and are 5-6 year vinyl. Anyone who may be interested in decals please feel free to contact me. To see more pics of my work see the following thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=7803570#post7803570

FYI:

I placed an order with Niagara Specialty Metals after this thread was pretty much buried and probably forgotten. If anyone is interested in what is happening with the order I placed with Tim and Jeff I've started a WIP thread here:

My thanks to Tim and Jeff for their professionalism and great customer service. I also want to thank Jim for having posted their info in response to my inquiry.
