where can I find a copy of "The bugle and the tiger"?

Yup, most books by Masters are a great read. I also recommend 'Prodigal Son', which is the third part of his autobiography. It provides an interesting insight into the immediate post-war period in India. Masters also moved his family to New England in the late 1940s, and Prodigal Son also provides an interesting re-telling of the first generation immigrant experience from a very unusual point of view.

There is another good one (sorry, can't remember the title) that is a fictional story about a Gurkha regiment fighting in France during WWI. I will post the title tonight for those who are interested.

Cheers for now,

Gary B.

Sorry, Uncle Bill, these days there just seems to be too many things happening at the same time ...

And Gary B, thanks for bringing up Prodigal Son - that's one title that has been on my to-read-list for a while now, need to find a copy. In fact, I need to find a copy of Bugles and a Tiger too, dad's old copy is in tatters back home. Methinks, I'll be paying alibris and bibliofind a visit soon!

The other WW1 fiction you mentioned, it isn't The Ravi Lancers, is it? John Masters' fictional account of an Indian cavalry regiment in France - great story.

Thanks Sonam, yes the Ravi Lancers is indeed the title. You are also correct about it being about cavalry rather than a Gurkha regiment. Great stuff though, none the less!

On the subject of great books my Father recently gave me a copy of 'The Last Enemy', by Richard Hillary. The author was a fighter pilot in the RAF during the Battle of Britain (he flew spitfires), and was shot down and killed before the end of the war. This is a very moving book, anyone interested in the role that spitfire pilots played in WWII would enjoy it.

Cheers for now,

Gary B.

Hey I read that one too as a kid! In an abridged version (collection of WWII stories) that my father had. You're right, another great read.

Very happy you are finding the time to post, Bhanis. We miss your firsthand experience and considerable knowledge.
