Where can I get a long axe handle?

I'm putting together an axe for chopping, splitting, cutting. Getting an old Collins Legitimus double head and cleaning it up. The longest handles I've seen are 36". I'm 6'4". I'm thinking something around 40" would be the right length for someone my size.

Anybody know where I can get longer than normal hickory axe handles?

I am thinking perhaps Doc Jastad could be of some help to you in this regard. He had, at one time, a connection with longer handles. Check out his web page for further details by visiting www.theaxehole.com to see if he has an answer to your query. I don't however, remember seeing a handle in such a length on the common market.

I have just recently re-hung an ax and a pick both. I got my handles at a local farm supply. The handles I bought were made by O.P. Link. They both had excellent grain structure and both were straight as an arrow. I have used O.P. Link handles on one occasion and I had good luck with that company before.

Oh there are 2 things to keep in mind when re-hanging an ax handle>> First of all make sure that the wood in the handle is the sap wood and not the heart wood. Second look at the bottom of the handle and make sure the grain is running in the direction of the ax bit. Good Luck

I don't think you need a handle that long. I am 6'2" and I use handles in the 30" range - both for working and competing. I have trouble finding handles that short for my double bits, most of the time. If you will be doing ANYTHING other than splitting with the axe, a handle as long as you are looking for will be almost impossible to control, especially if you are not quite expericenced in using an axe. You have a big body, use THAT to get your leverage, not your handle. Note that competitive choppers, up to and surpassing your height, almost always hang their axes at 23" (within an inch) between the bottom of the head and the widest flare of the handle swell.

My 2 cents, based on my experiences with an axe.

Have to agree with the assessment above. My Keech, Trojan, Arvika and Tuatahi all have handles in the 22-25 inch range. Control is an issue here, just ask Dave Bolstad.
