I know that Benchmade's out of the biz, but I sure would like to find a quality Balisong.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

VG,

Well I happen to like the Bear MGC 116. But no one else seems to agree with me. Most people prefer the Jaguars. If you really want a high quality bali then just wait for BM's new line that'll come out in about a year or so.

Bear makes a pretty good product. Eventually, the handle will break just below where the pin goes through.

Jaguar makes a pretty good product. Eventually, the pins will break.

Mike brags up on his Dragon Forge line. I haven't gotten around to trying one.

Armond Palacio has started exporting his from the Philippines. There's a huge thread going on over on Clay's site about it. People seem over all pleased. So far, it's survived Clay.

There are several custom makers making nice stuff. You can find them on my page.

Fred Perrin, who designed the la Griffe knives (Emerson) makes custom balisongs. I have seen pix of them in a french magazine named "passion des couteaux". He is a martial arts specialist and knows what a quality knife should look like. Maybe you can meet him at a knife show in the states. If not, i can try to look up his adress in france.

Well, Gollnick pretty much nailed the characteristics of the most common Balis you'll find out there now.

The one I use the most is the Jaguar silver skeleton handle model. It's OK for the price ($35), but the handle PINs will fail in minutes...... even if you DON'T know what you're doing. I change the PINs right out of the box. It's easy enough to do.

Other than that there's the Batangas over at KnifeZilla.com. It's definitly the best Philippine handmade you'll find.

I guess the questions are, what is your skill level, how much use are you going to give it, and how hard??

(Thanks Ewok!)
Clay, I have absolutely NO SKILL when it comes to Balisongs.
I just felt that one belonged in my collection. (I don't have much use for a sleeve dagger, but I still have one)

I just visited the dragonforge site and read the description of their balisong. It says the handle is aluminum and the pivot pins are stainless steel. Does anyone know if this is correct. I ask because many knives that say this actually have handles of some alloy that is heavier and not as strong as aluminum.
I remember owning a Taylor manila folder(long gone) that had actual aluminum handles.one of the lightest knives I've owned and it was literally blur-fast to open and close.
