Where can I get a REAL HIGH PERFORMANCE KATANA and WAKIZASHI??

I am looking to invest in a "real" Katana and Wakizashi (Daisho set).

It will be displayed when I am not using it, so it must be moderately decorated, but much more importantly this is a defensive weapon and a tool of enlightenment and practice. I plan to USE this sword, daily, and defend myself with it if necessary. I want the real deal.

So, where do I get the real deal?
I don't really need any wonder steel or anything, what I need is handling performance. I don't need a hand folded sword or anything, unless it realy enhances the handling performance somehow. I believe that a modern steel would work fine without paying some one to hand fold the steel and such.
It much exhibit true balance, a real fighting sword that I will not regret down the road wasting my money on. I have learned a fair amount of sword use, but will be learning more, so as I progress I don't want to outgrow it and later regard it as garbage because it is poorly designed. So, it needs the balance etc of the real deal. It needs to BE the real deal.

My budget was originally no more than $3000 for the Katana. Although I would prefer to spend more like $1500 if possible.
I want a Daisho, so I would really like to get the set for $4000 and certainly no more than $5000, but would prefer to spend half that on the set.

As I said, minimal decoration is needed, just enough to make it look decent around the house, but performance is what I need.

Any pointers or advice is appreciated, and any forums or websites to explore this further.

The only people I know of so far that offer decent "Samurai" swords is Bugei. But, I suspect that they are just the most popular on the market because they advertise so much, but that there may be better if I go with a lesser known brand.

Thanks!

Excessive caps aren't necessary in thread subjects, we see it just fine without.

What style of swordsmanship do you practice? What does your teacher suggest?

You will likely get a bunch of responses right away, but I'd like some more information. And please don't mention defense, as that is a sensitive nerve.

What time period are you looking at for waiting? This can really limit the choices.

Shinryû.

Hello Thaddeus:

Your question is similar to the one I've been asking of late. I'm assuming you've already gotten feedback from your teacher/sword style. The following are some sites that might be of interest, in addition to the ones listed in earlier posts:

On a personal note, the semi-traditionalist in me would love something in L-6 bainite by Howard Clark; unfortunately, he seems to be (like all excellent smiths) a very busy man. Something in CPM-3V would also be rather interesting; by some accounts CPM-3V would make an excellent sword steel, given proper heat treatment (profuse apologies to the traditionalists). Just my two cents. :-)

Best regards,
John Kuo
