I got a rhombic puukko blade blank from Pasi Hurttila in 2012 and have since lost that knife :(. I hear he doesn’t take orders anymore. Does anyone know where I can get a rhombic cross section blade of similar k510 silver steel quality? I’d like to order one from somewhere that has them in stock but would also wait for a blacksmith to make one. Anybody have a recommendation?

thanks.

What is your budget?

Check the maker's section, there are always puukos for sale there. Maybe one of the makers would be willing to commission a blank?

Cool, did not know. I’ll keep an eye out there.

Budget is ballpark. $40-$60. If I recall that’s approximately what I paid at one time.

By the way, I don’t see any blanks for sale, just completed knives which I have no interest in.

Radical suggestion: contact Brazilian cutliero Ivan Campos. I have one of his Scandi blades in 1070, probably the sharpest knife I own. He might be willing to make what you want though it probably would be stock removal instead of forging. But it would cut.

Forgive me, please. I've never lied and claimed to be "smart".

What's a "Rhombic"?

“Rhombic” in this context describes a knife with a diamond-shaped cross-section. It would appear to be a bit of a misnomer. Strictly speaking, a rhombus is a quadrilateral with four equal sides. The “rhombic” puukkos appear to have a cross-section that is more kite-shaped, with the two longer sides meeting at the edge, and the shorter sides meeting to form the spine.

That’s the way it looks from here, at any rate. I have only seen pictures, and never been in the presence of an actual rhombic knife. It is not the first time a term has been given its own special meaning in the knife world. See, “slipjoint”.

You can take a look at YP-Taonta (Puronvarsi) blades sold by Brisa, Lamnia and Thompson Scandinavian supply, but these are in 1075, taken to 60 HRC, rather than K510. Otherwise you can drop a line to Jari Liukko, he's on Facebook too, and commission one. He can forge it also from 80CrV2 or grind it from 12C27, Elmax and RWL-34.

Old friend, still a passion for the Finnish blade. Good to see.

Jelio makes masterpieces, but it sounds like you want to make it. Are you set up for grinding?
I made one from CPM 3V a year or two ago. Grinding the bevels was surprisingly easy, or I got lucky. The really tough part is the junction to the guard. Jelio's perfect ones remind me of the trouble I had.
