In case I wanna start learning to grind, I want to know a few manufacturers of straight HSS (not bi metal) blades. Thanks!

What are you going to grind? They are pretty darn thin, other than putting an edge on them I don't think you will learn much for grinding.

David MacDonald sells full HSS blades of various thicknesses on rec.knives. You can find his contact info on the newsgroup or drop me an email.

The blade.

They are much thicker than the edge needs to be (0.005"), you can grind a lot of metal off of them, and you want to put a deep hollow grind for ease of sharpening and cutting ability.

Cliff what hacksaw blades are you talking about? Almost all hack saw blades I've seen are very thin and would not be a goodthing to learn how to grind on, just because there isn't much to take off. They are also very easy to snap and break. Maybe that would teach you to have a lite touch, I'm not sure if that would be good or bad to learn on. Now if your talking about power hacksaw bladesthey are a little thicker but I don't know how to find them or what ones are full hard or even how thick they come. But they would probaly be a better choice than a normal hacksaw blade.

Buy yourself a huge bar of 1/8" 1095. It won't cost much, it's pretty easy to grind when soft, and if you accidentally make a good knife, you can heat treat it yourself and have something useful. Something as hard as HSS hacksaw blades (and as thin as most of them are) is just about the worst thing I can think of to try and learn to grind on. You're gonna wear out a lot of good belts to no good purpose, IMO.
