Where can I learn about steel?

I need to learn more about knife steel. Like learn about the chemical compositions, and what elements contribute what qualities and things like that. Anyone know of any good articles or sources for me to learn about that stuff?
 
that depends if you want a career in it. if so check your local higher education schools for metallugy. but as said them sites and threads are very interesting.

I'm glad someone said it. The charts and such you find explaining the role of different elements in knife steels can be very misleading. About the only ones that are consistently right are Carbon and Chromium.

This topic goes as deep as you want to dig, so if you're mildly curious, start digging with a spoon. If you really want to know, you may need a backhoe.

Cliff Stamp's old site had a bunch of great info on this subject. What ever became of that stuff? Is it preserved elsewhere?
