where did my PM go?

How does the PM function work on BF? After I click on notifications and see a message: 1. there is no reply button 2. if I back out of that page the PM will disappear. Where do the messages go?
 
Look for the Forum button on the top, right below you'll see Private Message. Click that.

^^^This is what happened. So a "notification" isn't necessarily exclusively a PM, correct? It could be either message type?

This is the first forum I've been a member of that had two distinct messaging types. For example, if a basic member wants to correspond with a gold member it can never actually be private because they don't have the capability, correct?

Correct. It can be either and they'll pop up in the same place for new messages. PMs are private conversations. VMs are public to everyone. Kinda like a conference call. Feedback notifications, friend requests, etc. will also show up there.

Basic Members (a paid membership) have PMs, but Registered Users (free) don't. All users have the option to use the email form as well.
