This MUST have been discussed before, but a search on "Spyderco" is too large. My wife asked me and I don't know.

I also looked on the Spyderco site.

From the Spyderco Story (2000 Paladin Press) by K. Delavigne page 3, The Spyderco Name: "The name Spyderco and the mascot Spider that became embodied in the company's logo were derived from the word "spyder", which represented two things: the spiderlike shape of the Portable Hand (Sal's first patented invention) and the designation some European automakers gave to high-performance roadsters. High performance, then and now, was what Sal wanted to provide in whatever products he sold."

Hi Everyone,

The Portable Hand is a patented product Sal developed 25+ years ago. It is a device that has multiple alligator-like clips that position and hold circuit board components in place during manufacturing.

Sal invented that? Way cool! I have one sitting downstairs. I use it for repairing my guitar. It's VERY handy.
