One constant that I've noticed ever since I started visiting the FB sub is that many of us love nature (anything outdoors really) and photography. So I thought I'd start a thread where we could share some snapshots of our past adventures, and live vicariously through one another. It can also be an urban adventure, as Fiddlebackers come from all walks of life.

So I'll start it off with couple of photos from one of my favorite adventures in recent years, where two of my best friends and I traveled through the beautiful states of Washington and Oregon

Josh

Cool thread Josh! That looks like a great trip. I haven't spent much time in the PNW. Looks like it's worth a visit.

Here are some areas I like to hike around in and go camping:

Rocky Mountain National Park

Tons of great trails including this one that visits some high country lakes.

Nymph Lake:

There's also a nice little easy trail that goes around Sprague Lake:

We camp here a couple times a year and you're pretty much guaranteed to see some great wildlife:

Genesee Park

Close to Denver and good for hiking around and having picnics with the family.

Arapahoe National Forest

Every fall for the past 5 years I've gone out to Fraser CO and spent some time hiking around in Arapahoe National Forest.

Thanks for playing Túrin, yeah you should definitely visit if the opportunity is there. If you love nature, skiing, good food and wine, they have a lot to offer. September is an awesome time to visit. I love Colorado though I've only visited for skiing. Some day I'd like to visit for some summer adventure.

Wow! I really like this thread. You guys take some spectacular photos!
Thanks Josiah, come on man, play and post something. I know you went on an R&R this weekend ;)

I did go to Monterey for the a couple of days, but the camera was too far from the ice chest.:D

Matatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico

The epicenter of Mescal

Last November I took son of fod (and myself) to Matatlan the center of mescal production. We visiited a number of distilleries and had a great ime visiting.

The playful agave plant, this one is a coyote maguey.

Dug up and trimmed, called a "pina":

A pit us dug and filled with hot rocks and quartered pinas:

Buried and roasted for a week or so

Roasted and ready to mash

very smoky and sweet

Dug up and mashed the old school way

notice the pine fermentation vats in the background, the next step after mashing.

Aging barrels

Pine fermentation vats and the guy that makes them for the whole town.

Son of fod and I with the guys that mad our mescal.

The still working at one of the places we found:

Okay I'll play. Here's a trip I took a month or so ago. The family and I took a family trip/team building trip to a little gold mining town called Downieville.

Here's a bask of Fiddlebacks sun bathing on a sandy beach we decided to have lunch on.

The fork of the Yuba and Downieville river. I've hooked into some very large, line snapping fish in the darker pool area of the pic.

Sounds like a fun trip, love the sunbathing FBs and the concept of team building for the family

Great pics guys -- ill update some tomorrow!

@FOD: Is that Leyva family's farm? My wife and I honeymooned in Jalisco & Mazatlan a few years back.. some of the best mezcal & tequila I've ever had. period.

I doubt it. . .This is down in the state of Oaxaca, way more south of the border than where you were.

I love hiking in the swamps of south Florida.

Thanks for the posts Mist, beautiful pics. I have absolutely no experience in the swamps, can't imagine how exciting it'd be to be exposed to such an ecosystem.

I'm from California, but never heard of Downieville. Looked it up and wow! What a beautiful place...

There's not a whole lot to do there but mountain bike, fish and breath the fresh air, but life does slows down a whole lot, which is just fine in my book. When ever I leave, I always say to myself "Man, I can't wait to come back...".

Wow, man I love this thread, lots of gorgeous scenery and cool shots!

It was alien to me when dad first moved me down there, but it is beautiful, and a bit dangerous at times, which in a way makes it even more beautiful. I like to visit it now and then, and would love to retire in the Keys

Last year a friend and I went hiking up to the troves below haystack mountain here in Central Utah. Some friends and I will be heading back there May 18th to the 20th. Follow this link for the pictures: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjGpHqC6

Mount Nebo in Central Utah is a favorite hike of mine. Here are some pictures from my trip in July 2011: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjBLpCD9

Huntington Reservoir up Fairview canyon, another favorite of mine: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjzN38vt

Hey Mist, is that a hike or a wade in the swamps?

Thanks fod for playing, had not heard of mescal before so I'm learning something new!

My pleasure. Tequila is a (large) branch of the mescal tree. Although the processes differ all mescals are made from an agave (maguey in Spanish) The blue agave is made into tequila and the other agaves (espadin, coyote, verde, tobala. . . )are made into mescal.

Good mescal is a very different drink and hard to find.

Hey Mist, is that a hike or a wade in the swamps?

Ummm, well...sort of a wading hike at times :D. LOL, the ants were so bad, whenever I got tired I'd have to wade out into shallow water just to sit down and rest :)

Ah Mexico... Love the country, but I got myself into too much trouble down there. Still have family in Mexico City, and I've spent time driving all over down to Acapulco.

We spend a lot of time in the summer camping near Hume Lake above Fresno. Stunning place and I usually have the family drive up in the minivan while I ride my bike. For anyone familiar with the Tail of the Dragon, there's a section up there known as the little tail. ;)

No pictures with the Fiddlebacks, so I won't post any until later this year. My pics from Pismo beach are in another thread.
