I am now just getting into the realm of making my own knives. But before i invest anything i want to know where i can buy some steel? I like in southern california as is kinda hard to find much materials where i live. Is there any internet dealer who would sell in small quantities? Or any shop i should visit here in southern california? I'm near the Disneyland area.

Thanks

Some guy in California just ate a worm and boy is it yummy.

Try Jeff Carlisle: Swains Spring Service Inc.
1800-378-1246 He lives in Montana. He will send you any amount! Good prices and a great guy!

Years ago I used to haul a lot of specialty steels into Reliance Steel. As I recall they were in Hawthorne? Maybe Whittier? Sorry, it has been 20 years. You might try and find them for a local source. I use www.admiralsteel.com.

This was years ago but I used to get my steel from Bender Metals in either Anaheim or Garden Grove, not sure which. They had great prices. As low as .25 a pound.

Do you know where Ontario is? (As in California, not Canada) A place called Tru-Grit should have all the materials you need if you are strictly doing stock removal.

I have a list of suppliers that is yours for the asking. Let me know if you would like a copy or not.

I'd love for a list of anykind. Thanks for all the sources.

Pete, if you buy from Admiral, don't buy their 440c, unless you're planning on a satin or bead blasted finish.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!

I bought 40' of 5160 3/16"X2" for $60. from a local automotive spring shop. I had to wait several weeks to beat the shipping charges. They simply placed my steel with their next shipment. Great practice steel

Buy the way they got it FROM California.
Hope that helps.
OOPS be sure you ask them for RAW bar stock.

If your in So. Cal I would suggest Tru-Grit. They are great folks and you get your material QUICK!! They have ATS, BG-42, 440C, and some damascus.. They also have a great selection of grinding belts..

Take Care

bobH beat me to it. A shop that makes automotive springs might have what you need to practice on for a very reasonable price.
