Where do I start looking?

I want to start carrying a traditional folder for use around lots of people or at school where I don't want to draw attention to my Para2 or larger EDC blade. I do have a Case Peanut that I found in almost mint condition that I use occasionally. I would like something with a longer blade than 2" though (probably more like 3"). And probably with 2 or 3 blades. I'll admit I am a complete traditional knife noob (until recently, the only brands I knew of were Case, Queen, and Schrade). I am wondering where is the best place to find a quality knife and what brands I should look out for. I can't spend more than $50 or so, if that makes a difference.

Thanks, and I hope to hang around more as I acquire more in the future!

Agreed or you could get a used Schrade (one of the old US made ones) in the Bay.

Hi!

Buck would be a good choice.

If you want any Carbon steel blades look for a Case in CV. Maybe the Case Stockman Yellow Delrin CV would be a good choice and in your price range.

Old Schrades are really worth a view... Böker has also some traditionals in stock. So you see, there are many knives to choose and select. I´m sure you´re gonna find something you like.

Kind regards

I like what everyone else said: Buck 301, Buck 303, older USA Schrades, older USA Remington (camillus-made) bullet knives. All these will run you about $30 when you find a good price. There is also the Case Sodbuster for $20, but it is single-bladed. There are also a few places online where you can pick up a Case stockman with bone handle for around $45.

Now when I'm at school, I usually carry a Schrade USA 108ot. It's a mini stockman - very good size for being discreet.

One final recommendation I would make is the Buck 55. It is an extremely good discreetly-sized knife. Everyone is familiar with the look of the Buck 110, but the Buck 55 is in a more compact package. It fits really well in the watch pocket of jeans, and will run you about $30-$35. Happy huntin

What's the difference between CV and stainless steel in Case knives?

I do prefer the look and feel of bone but I will buy whatever fits my needs.

Maybe a stockman or trapper would work, and there's always the sodbuster. If you aren't sure what pattern you'd like, Rough Rider makes some great knives that are cheap enough that you can experiment.

What's the difference between CV and stainless steel in Case knives?

CV is short for Chrome Vanadium. CV is carbon steel and will be more prone to corrosion. It will also take on a nice patina giving the blades that old time traditional look.

Case's Tru-Sharp stainless is more than sufficiant for a traditional knife too.

My wife got a me a Boker Tree Brand whittler with beer barrel handles for Christmas. I absolutely love the way this knife feels, its is like no other knife I own. It was just under 50 bucks shipped.

Lots of good advice, excellent place to start looking is in the Traditionals section of the exchange. Lots of stuff there to get your feet wet.

Nothing wrong with a Buck 301 I've been carrying one fro a few months know and love it also Case's Yellow Delrin CV Stockmans are very reasonably priced and very old school you may however find the trapper and mini trapper patterns of some interest.

Look what came in the mail yesterday, Thank you CAD! He asked if he could give me one of his extra stockmans, then the package came with two in it! A Buck 301 and 303! Both these knives are great and i think the Peanut will take a backseat to the 303 most days. Again, Chris thank you so much!

A most generous gift.
Those were pre-1985 and made by Camillus.

Chris just joined the A-list for generosity.

You're welcome ol_sc! Glad you like them. I really like the older Bucks when they had flat ground blades like those.
All the best with your studies.
