Where do these old discontinued knives NIB come from?

Every so often I see a bunch of NIB knives that were discontinued long ago. For example, a few months ago I saw a bunch of Benchmade Skirmishes going for less then the original retail price (and I picked one up, it was LNIB, but there were a couple of NIB's out there as well).

Sometimes on the sales forums you see an old classic, and the guy has 5 or 10, or even 20 that are NIB. Where the hell were they before? Did someone buy a bunch and put them away? Why would they suddenly sell them now?

Just wondering.

Need/want money, maybe. I don't know, why do you sell things? lol

LOL, I don't, I am a terrible hoarder. I usually donate stuff to salvation army or something when things start to pile up.

They get old and need the money to pay for those golden years, You know, the golden years for Doctors and Hospitals.:grumpy:

Sometimes a dealer or distributor will discover a stash somewhere they hadn't looked in a while also. But yeah, more often than not it's an individual who just stowed them away for a rainy day.

There's a lively trade in buying the inventory of defunct businesses and piecing it off. That's where some of those knives are coming from, odd lot old stock from dead sporting goods stores.

Heck, some people are still finding hardware stores with original Schrade-Old Timer knives in display cases. And they went out of business in 2004!

It's kind of ironic, since every so often you get swept up in a trend for some popular knife, and it is sold out, nowhere to be found-- and then, 10 years later, voila! Turns out there were a bunch just sittin' around somewhere, forgotten about!

Yep,
Ran into that in Petaluma CA. They had about 7 or so USA in the display cases. Problem is, the cost was about 15% more than a shipped NIB one on Ebay. However, knowing it was a good find, I picked up a 94OT with the steel toothpick and tweezers. I paid about 35 for it.

A little different, but follows the same idea.

I went to a local shop that sells some knives, saw a 2002 annual Sebenza. Employee said it's been for sale longer than hes been an employee, so I assume it's been there for the entire 8 years.

I think this economy has put a lot of people on their knees - and I believe some are selling off their collection due to economic hardship.

Speaking for myself - I used to buy a lot of knives and just put them on the shelf if I lost interest in them. I can't afford to do that any more so once they lose their sparkle they go up for sale.

I never got in the habit of buying closeouts or multiples of a certain model of knife, but I can only assume that some may be questioning whether they really need 10 of the same knife locked in the safe.

I'm a packrat. I've got some boxes of knives stashed away. Some I haven't looked at in years.
I sell a few now and then if I want something like a new pool cue, strippers, new TV etc..I feel better spending that money than pulling out of my savings.
