Where do you all Measure Thickness on a Knife

Ok, I was wondering where everyone takes their measurements. The reason why is because taking measurements at the birds beak, the base of the blade or where the choil meets the cutting edge will give differing results. So whre do you all base your measurements from?

Traditionally, the measurement is taken at the ricasso, just forward of the slabs.

I measure four to six places.

All four corners around the handle, half way down the blade, then one inch or so back from the tip.

I then list the thickest measurement, where is was taken, and list the distal taper.

I also note coated or not coated when telling others about thickness in a particular knife.

I've adopted the standard of spine just forward of the slabs.

Just my preference.....

Butt and just in front of the slabs, spine and talon hole.

Ok, so just in front of the slabs or behind the ricaso is typical. Papathud gives a much more accurate way to measure even if it isn't the norm.

I measured a bunch of my SHBM's and found that the thickness at the talon hole is the same as the thickness just forward of the handle slabs, which is more than after the ricasso where the cutting edge actually begins due to taper as Papathud put it.

Interesting stuff.

Man, you got a big set of calipers!!!

That's a job for surveying equipment.

If a quick measurement is required, you could use GPS.

True, butt, isn't it better to have both thickness at the base and near the top of the blade so you get a stronger blade overall. Thi is what I'm talkin about...

if you combine that with the right size spine at the base..then it's perfect. Here is what I am talking about for base spine thickness..
