In Japan, (not many) special shops to buy good knives. Some largest knife shops have web shop networks.
Main items(like SAK and Buck#110) can get in department store sports shops.
Not good makers, cheap resemble knives are sold in DIY and some large supermarkets.
It is interesting that, Ginaza the most famous shop city in Japan there are not greatest and most knife shops. Much more and maybe most knife shops in Akihabara to Ame-yoko!

And where in U.S.? I cannot find knife in shop while short trip of SanFrancisco, LA, and SanDiego.

Here in Arizona you can go to one of the mall knife shops or shop on-line at a number of sites or wait and go to one of the local gun/knife shows that they have here every couple of months. In San Fran. I think there use to be a knife shop on Pier 39...don't know if it is still there. In San Diego I think Strider knives is close by.

Most of us buy via the internet. The prices are better than the stores and the selection is greater. Knife/Gun shows are always the best as you can handle/inspect the knife and the prices are also better than what the stores offer. You can also find some very good deals here on the forum in the exchange section.

Hehe. I remember paying much more for my Victorinox Tinker at Tokyu Hands... 50% more than the prices in Hong Kong, I believe. Good thing it wasn't too expensive.

Akihabara's a cool place. Kind of like Mong Kok, in Hong Kong. Not many high-end knife places in HK though, they mainly sell Gerbers for a lot of $$$.

If you're headed towards San Francisco, check out Triple Aught Design for a great selection of knives and good prices.
