On a belt sander, I mean? Everything I see is about 60-100 grit, way too coarse for sharpening knives. Anybody know a website or something to get this from? Thanks.

Paging Mr. Thombrogan, paging Mr. Thombrogan.

Contact Thombrogan since he recently bought a belt sander just for the purpose of sharpening knives. I'm sure he has a couple of goods suggestions.

Get a some 220 and 320 belts. I use a 120 to put the initial bevels on.

Whatch that heat.....you will ruin you nives. Those grinder heat the blade up WAY to fast.

Like blgoode said 220 to 320. I sharpen on 320 aluminum oxide. Keep a pan of water next to the sander and dip blade after each pass to keep it cool. You'll take the hardness out if you overheat.

For the 1x30's I recommend SuperGrit. See if you can get Trizac belts in 45, 30, and 15 Microns.

Trizac (and norax) belts, cut smooth and slow. Very nice for sharpening. And be careful. and don't have the workrest on there. You don't want anything below the belt that the blade might get wedged in.

I'm new to this forum but not to shop equipment and supplies.

Check out Industrial Abrasives a www.industrialabrasives.com They have 1x30 up to 400 grit.

Better yet, they have a buy a dozen and get a dozen free deal going on for belts. I just got an order in for myself and the 2x72's ended up about $1.79 each with the buy one get one deal.

15 microns is very fine, right? Like 1000 grit?

The 3M belts that Lee Valley sells are great, although they are expensive. That 9 micron belt leaves a mirror polished edge. Finish it off with a leather belt loaded with green rouge and you'll have one of the sharpest edges you've ever seen.

G.L. Pierce abrasive co. has any size belt or grit you want ,and there cheaper than anybody else. They dont have a website, but their # is 800-938-0021
