Where do you get your custom knives?

The right custom is hard to find. I've been looking for the right bowie knife forever, it seems, and I'm still searching. The sites that I know of are here on bladeforums, as well as a few others like arizonacustomknives, rehobothcustomknives, nordicknives, michigancustomknives, bladeart. These all have a lot of inventory, but I've noticed many others that have hardly anything to sell. What's up with that? Arizona seems to have the largest inventory, and it also adds new items very frequently, everyday it seems. Anybody know of any other sites that actually have custom knives or swords in their inventory and/or add to their inventory frequently?

Try A.G. Russell. They usually have a few. Like the above post says though, you may want to contact the knife maker directly. If the wait is longer than you want, then shop around for a custom you are interested in.

You can get just about any custom knife in the world from a knife maker on this site. Watch Knife Makers Discussion > Knife Makers Market. If you see the exact knife you want, buy it. If you see one that is sort of what you want, contact the maker and the chances are he will make just what you want. The prices may seem high compared to a Buck or CKRT but the materials are the best and the craftsmanship is usually far superior.

You gotta quit looking and have one commissioned from a maker preferably from here. If not, you may be looking a long time. It takes a while to have one made, even longer to expect one to pop up for sale.

I meet the makers at the Blade Show, order what I want, and pick it up at the next Blade Show one year later. Most makers can do it in a year. Also I can buy or order materials at the Show and give them to the maker or have them drop shipped. I can also request that makers or purveyors bring stuff of interest to me to the next Show. I can have stuff made, modified, or repaired. Works out great if you’re not in a hurry.

The majority of my handmade knives were made by Bob Dozier (or Dan). I have others. You can also buy stuff from Knives Ship Free that are handmade. For true customs, you have to contact the maker or buy at a show. Blade is a great place to meet with various makers and look at their product. But not all makers can afford to have tables at the Blade Show.

Thanks to everybody who chipped in. All excellent advice. I actually already have one custom direct from the maker, plus another one on the way from another maker. I guess that I was saying it would feel more convenient to just order one that I like from a site that already has the item in its inventory. You get it in about three days or so, if it's a good site.

BTW I got a nice knife from Ben Tendick here on bladeforums. So I do keep perusing the knifemaker's for sale forum here. It is very slow sledding though, as that was the only knife I got here in several years of looking. I gotta stop wasting time looking around and just start ordering more from makers here.:D

www.bladegallery.com has a large and diverse selection. They’ve been around for a long time and I’ve had nothing but great experiences dealing with them. This is part of a retail operation so all the people there really know their products.

www.bladeconnection.com is the same company (Epicurean Edge in Kirkland, WA). This link lists some customs as well as mid-techs and good production knives.
